COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Junior Chelsea Jackson gave the Maryland women's soccer team the lead at halftime, but two second half goals helped Appalachian State down the Terps, 2-1, at Appalachian Soccer Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The Terrapins (2-3-1) started strong before Appalachian State controlled the second half to eventually earn the win. The Terps were able to rack up 11 shots, but could not find the breakthrough after the Mountaineers took the lead in the 83rd minute.
Maryland's best chance in the opening minutes came from some combination play from Jackson and sophomore Jarena Harmon. Jackson took the ball near midfield and burst past a defender before slides the ball toward Harmon, who saw her shot blocked.
Jackson opened the scoring in the 23rd minute. Junior Kate Waters picked the ball up in midfield and floated the ball into the box for Jackson, who used a nice first touch to bring the ball down. The Round Rock, Texas native proceeded to beat her marker and slide the ball near post past goalkeeper Sam Steyl.
The tally was Jackson's third of the season and her first since the Terps's draw with Gardner-Webb on Aug. 21.
Appalachian State evened the contest in the 57th minute when Erin Settle scored on a left-footed shot off a Sarah Murphy assist. The Mountaineer winner came with just seven minutes remaining when Jane Cline fired a shot in the box that hit the bottom of the crossbar and dropped in.
Jackson and freshman Hannah Hoefs both created decent chances in the second 45 minutes, but the Terps were unable to mount a significant offensive charge in the final moments.
The Terps hit the field next on Wednesday as they travel to Navy for a midweek match. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
