Second Half Surge Lifts #3 Terps Past Hawkeyes

IOWA CITY, Iowa – A 20-point second half advantage led the third-ranked Maryland women's basketball team (17-1, 5-0 B1G) to a 98-82 win over Iowa (11-7, 2-3) in head coach Brenda Frese's home state Saturday.

Brionna Jones led the way with her eighth straight double-double of 25 points and 10 rebounds. Shatori Walker-Kimbrough scored 20 of her 22 points in the second half as the Terps outscored Iowa 55-35 in the second half.

Destiny Slocum added 14 points with six assists and five boards. Brianna Fraser scored 11 points and Ieshia Small had 10.

The Terrapins started the game on an 11-2 run and opened a 27-16 lead at the end of the first quarter. Maryland struggled in the second quarter after Jones picked up two quick fouls, falling behind by four at the break after a quick 20-3 Hawkeyes run.

"I thought we regrouped at halftime (and) really buckled down defensively," Frese said. "We played much better defense in the second half."

The Terrapins finally got untracked with a 13-0 run in the third quarter, and Walker-Kimbrough's three-pointer near the end of the third quarter made it 69-59.

Walker-Kimbrough's 3 early in the fourth put Maryland up by 20 to cap a 39-15 spurt -- fueled by pressure defense -- that gave the Terrapins their expected result.

"We fought back," Walker-Kimbrough said. "We had to match their intensity."

Tania Davis scored 25 points for Iowa.

Frese grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, about 25 miles from the Iowa campus. She grew up going to Iowa games and attended the Iowa basketball camps. The Terrapins will visit her parents' home where she grew up Friday evening.

Maryland has won all four meetings with Iowa since joining the Big Ten, and is 5-0 overall in the series.

Next, the Terps will return home to host Michigan (14-4, 3-1) Thursday at 6 p.m. ET at the XFINITY Center. For tickets, visit the Terrapin Ticket Office online at umterps.com or call 1-800-IM-A-TERP.

The Maryland-Michigan game will be televised around the world on the Big Ten Network.
