#14 Maryland Tops Penn State for 11th Straight Win

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.  – The 14th-ranked Maryland women's basketball team (13-2, 2-0 B1G) pulled out a tough road win at Penn State, 69-65, Sunday afternoon at the Bryce Jordan Center.

A hot-shooting night from Blair Watson, a strong second half from Ieshia Small and clutch points in the final seconds from Stephanie Jones sealed the Terrapins' 11th straight win and fifth straight over the Nittany Lions (9-6, 0-2). The Terps trailed by two with three minutes to go and made plays down the stretch for the victory.

Watson hit five threes for a team-high 15 points, to go with six boards and three blocks. Small scored 14 points, including 10 in the second half, and Brianna Fraser chipped in 12 with eight rebounds. Kristen Confroy added 10 points and Kaila Charles grabbed 11 rebounds.

To start the matchup, Watson sunk a three and after a three by Confroy put Maryland ahead 8-1, the Lady Lions called timeout, just 1:43 into the game. Penn State went on a 9-0 run to tie the game at 13, but another three by Watson with 25 seconds gave the Terps a 21-18 lead at end of quarter

The Lady Lions took the second quarter, 23-19 to lead 41-40 at halftime. The Terps started the third quarter 1-for-6 from the field to trail 47-42.

Small answered with seven straight points to jumpstart a 12-3 run for the Terrapins, which gave them a lead a 54-50 with three minutes left in the third quarter. Two quick scores from the Nittany Lions game them a 55-54 lead at the end of the quarter.

The teams traded buckets in the fourth quarter, then with the game tied at 65 with 1:19 to play, Penn State called timeout. The Lady Lions turned the ball over after the timeout on a five seconds call.

Jones stepped to the line for her first free throws of the day and knocked them both down to make it 67-65 with 59 seconds left. After a missed Penn State shot, Confroy grabbed a defensive rebound, then Jones finished a layup with 12 seconds left for a 69-65 lead.
