COLLEGE PARK, Md.Freshmen Mikayla Dayes and Hope Lewandoski scored second half goals to push the Maryland women's soccer team past Drexel, 2-1, in the Terps' season opener at Ludwig Field Friday night.

The Terrapins (1-0-0) and Dragons tallied all three goals of the match in the second half. Dayes goal was answered by Drexel within two minutes before Lewandoski put the match away in the 63rd minute.

Maryland had the best chance of the first half in the opening moments. Dayes crossed the ball from the left flank into senior Madison Turner, who saw her right-footed effort in the box parried by Drexel keeper Christiana Ogunsami.

After Turner's opportunity, the two teams traded possession, but were unable to create chances. Dayes had a decent look in the final minute of the half, but her header was saved by Ogunsami.

The freshman would not be denied in the 49th minute. Dayes lined up a shot from the right channel and lifted it over Ogunsami from 25 yards for her first collegiate goal. Vanessa Kara would answer for Drexel just a minute later when she slid the ball past Terps keeper Rachel Egyed.

Maryland controlled the majority of play after the goals. Junior Jarena Harmon was denied on a point blank effort in the 59th minute before Dayes hit the post in the 61st minute.

Lewandoski found the winner in the 63rd minute. The Ohio native received the ball after it popped out of the box and found the upper right corner from 25 yards away.

From there, Maryland thwarted Drexel's attempts to square the match. The backline of Hope Gouterman, Jlon Flippens, Zoe Clark and Sydney Staier played well in front of Egyed for the final 20 minutes as Maryland closed out the contest.

Maryland bested Drexel in shots (10-8), shot on goal (6-4) and corner (7-5).

The Terps return to action Sunday night as Navy comes to Ludwig Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
