Weekend Recap
Maryland opened with two victories this weekend; a 2-1 win over Drexel on Friday and a 3-0 win over Navy Sunday. The freshmen duo of Mikayla Dayes and Hope Lewandoski scored against the Dragons, both on 25-yard strikes in the second half.
The Terps once again surged in the second half on Sunday against Navy, with all three goals coming in the final 45 minutes. Senior Chelsea Jackson, sophomore Jlon Flippens and junior Jarena Harmon all scored while goalkeeper Rachel Egyed made four saves.
Youth is Served
Maryland has received major contributions from its freshman class over its first two contest. Along with Dayes' and Lewandoski's goals, Mary Johnston and Anissa Mose both picked up assists.
On the backline, Sydney Staier has played well in both matches. Malikae Dayes made her first career start Sunday against Navy and was solid next to Jlon Flippens in central defense.
Three Terps Named Big Ten Players to Watch
Madison Turner, Jarena Harmon and Jlon Flippens were named Big Ten Player to Watch.
Turner started all 19 matches in 2016 and notched two assists. The senior, who started games at forward, in the midfield and along the backline last season, is expected to once again help the Terps in a variety of positions on the field.
Harmon, a junior, was Maryland's second leading scorer in 2016 with eight goals and combined with Chelsea Jackson as one of the top scoring tandems in the conference. The Washington D.C., native also added one assist over her 16 starts.
Flippens burst onto the scene as a freshman last year, recording a team high in minutes played (1763) and starting all 19 matches. She led the Terps with four assists and also added a goal.
Action Jackson
Senior forward Chelsea Jackson returns for her senior campaign after leading the Terps in scoring a team-high nine goals with two assists. She was second on the team in shots with 33.
Including Jackson's tallies, Maryland returns 20 of its 21 goals from the 2016 season.
Between the Sticks
Maryland's most experienced returner in goal is redshirt junior Rachel Egyed, who started eight games and played in 14 last season. Newcomers Erin Seppi (Boston College transfer) and Andi Wenck (Kansas State transfer) will also vie for playing time.
Fresh Faces
Maryland brings in a dynamic freshmen class of 15 student athletes that all have the ability to contribute. More information on the class can be found here.
