WASHINGTON, D.C. – Former Maryland women's basketball great Kristi Toliver was hired to the Washington Wizards staff as an assistant coach/player development for the 2018-19 season, Wizards head coach Scott Brooks announced Tuesday.
Toliver comes to the Wizards' bench after helping to lead the Washington Mystics to the 2018 WNBA Finals. She also assisted the Wizards' coaching staff during 2018 NBA Summer League and training camp. Toliver has been in the pros for 10 seasons.
She was originally drafted third overall by Chicago in the 2009 draft out of Maryland, where she led the Terrapins to the 2006 national championship. Toliver is still the Terrapins' all-time leader in assists (751), threes made (300) and free throw percentage (86.6).
Over the last few years, five members of
Brenda Frese's staff have made the jump to work in the NBA. Toliver joins former Maryland women's basketball assistant David Adkins on the Wizards' player development staff. Five-year assistant coach Adkins came to Maryland after becoming a highly-respected development coach at the high school level. He helped lead the Terrapins to a Sweet Sixteen, an Elite Eight and the 2014 Final Four. In 2014, he was hired by the Wizards as their assistant coach for player development.
Former practice player and intern, and Maryland men's basketball graduate assistant, Ryan Richman was hired as a Wizards' assistant coach prior to this season.
After three years in College Park, assistant coach Terry Nooner was hired by the Cleveland Cavaliers as a player development/assistant coach this past August.
Former practice player and intern Winston Gandy spent three seasons as the Coordinator of Player Development for the Wizards before taking an assistant coaching job with the women's program at Rice.
