Throughout the 2018-19 season, umterps.com will run a Q&A series with members of the Maryland wrestling team and staff. Fans will get to know more about their background and wrestling history, as well as some fun facts they may not have known before. Next up: freshman Decklan Fischer!
On what it means to wrestle in the state of Maryland:
"It's a pretty big deal for me. I've always looked up to this school and gone to camps here when I was going through youth wrestling. It's a lot easier on my parents and I like being able to go home or have them easily come see me."Â
On having the most wins in his high school's history:Â
"I'd say the coolest part about it is that I beat my brother's record. He had 131 wins and I really wanted to beat him. I got hurt my senior year, so I wasn't sure if I was going to end up passing him. I ended up getting to 148, so I was able to pull it off."
On if he and his brother talked about breaking the record:
"It wasn't really something we talked about much. He was still helping me a lot during my senior year. He'd watch film on me or my opponent and would give me tips ahead of my matches. As I got closer to the record he'd send me texts like 'Hey, maybe don't wrestle today' but it was a cool thing for both of us."
On what brought him to Maryland:
"I really liked the coaching staff here. I knew we were going to have a big freshman class and I liked knowing we could be a class that brought a lot to the program. I also love the facilities and campus. I've been here a bunch when I was growing up, so it just felt right."
On adjusting to college:
"I really like being responsible for myself. It's tough at times, but I'm getting the hang of things. I also like the wrestling experience and everything being a student-athlete provides me."
On the biggest adjustment from high school to college wrestling:
"I grew up in an area that wasn't super big on wrestling, so it was a challenge finding high-level partners growing up. I'd often have to train with guys who were in the upper weight classes since I couldn't find people my size and weight. Now, I always have people in the room who I can go with and they're all pushing the pace and challenging me."
On his goals for the upcoming season:
"I'm trying to win some open tournaments and get in the starting lineup as often as possible. I just want to continue to grow and get better."
