Getting to Know: Lucas Cordio

Throughout the 2018-19 season, umterps.com will run a Q&A series with members of the Maryland wrestling team and staff. Fans will get to know more about their background and wrestling history, as well as some fun facts they may not have known before. Next up: freshman Lucas Cordio

On winning three state championships in high school:
"The one that stands out is my freshman year. I had never won anything that big when I was in middle school. It was a good feeling knowing that I had a real chance to win any match I was in during my high school career. Expectations were higher which made me work harder in training."

On if he felt pressure as such a high-profile high school wrestler:
"At first it was a lot of pressure. But, in my junior and senior years, I just took the mentality that I'm going to go out and do whatever I can to score points and win matches."

On how his high school success will translate to college wrestling:
"I think my work ethic and pace will translate very well. I still have a lot to develop in terms of my technique and things of that nature -- especially because the competition in our wrestling room is so high. But, I think a lot of my success and skill set will translate and allow me to have success in college."

Biggest changes from high school to college wrestling:
"The level of competition is so high. Everybody in our room wants to achieve the same success, so they're all working their hardest every single day. Nobody here gives a half effort and everyone is always working at 110%."

On his goals for this season:
"I definitely want to make the starting lineup. Beyond that I just want to work as hard as I possibly can, win matches and get better throughout the year."

On how he would describe himself as a wrestler:
"Slick and intense."

Favorite food in College Park:
"Lotsa Pizza."

Favorite sports movie:
"Remember the Titans"

Favorite musical genre:
"Rap"

Hobbies outside of wrestling:
"I love lifting weights and working out."
