ATLANTA – Junior
Kaila Charles of the Maryland women's basketball team (4-0) is one of 35 top players in the country named to the "Wade Watch" list of candidates for the 2019 Wade Trophy presented to the best player in college women's basketball, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced Tuesday.
Charles is leading the Terrapins in scoring with 15.5 points per game and is also chipping in 7.8 boards per game.
In Sunday's win over No. 10 South Carolina, Charles scored 17 points with 10 rebounds. She is the 33
rd Terrapin to reach the 1,000 career points mark and also hit 500 career rebounds in 73 career games.
Charles was named to the Naismith Watch List, the Preseason All-Big Ten Team and the Cheryl Miller Award Watch List this fall.
The Wade Trophy — now in its 42nd year — is the oldest and most prestigious national player of the year award in college women's basketball. It is named in honor of the late, legendary Delta State University head coach Lily Margaret Wade, who won three consecutive national championships with the Lady Statesmen.
The "Wade Watch" list of candidates for the Wade Trophy is composed of players selected by the WBCA NCAA Division I Coaches' All-America Selection Committee. The committee will review the list in January to determine if additional players will be added based on their play during the first half of the 2018-19 season.
Next, the Terrapins will travel to San Juan, Puerto Rico to play in the Puerto Rico Clasico tournament over Thanksgiving. They will take on Morgan State (1-2) Friday and No. 14 Georgia (2-2) Saturday. Both games will be played at noon ET and will be streamed live online
here.
