PRINCETON, N.J. -- Redshirt senior
Alfred Bannister went undefeated in five matches, taking home the 149-pound title at the Princeton Open on Sunday.
Bannister's day included a pair of victories by fall, and was capped by a 3-2 decision in the title bout. One of Bannister's pins came just 24 seconds into the match, besting his 2017-18 best pin time of 25 seconds.
It was the second-consecutive season the Maryland-native made it to the championship match of the event. After a second-place finish last season, Bannister was able to take home the trophy to begin his senior season.
Michael Doetsch,
Philip Spadafora and
Jaron Smith also found success in the event, placing sixth, fourth and third respectively.
Spadafora and Smith each started their days with three-consecutive victories before falling in the semifinals. Spadafora opened the day with a first-period fall, before winning by decision and then by technical fall in the quarterfinal. He then fell to Lehigh's Chase Gallik in the semifinal bout.
After receiving a bye in the first round, Smith got his day started with a major decision win over Purdue's Jared Florell. He then stuck Trey Rodgers of Hofstra in the first period of his quarterfinal match, but lost to Antonio Agee of Old Dominion in the semifinal to finish the day in third place of the 184-pound bracket.
Doetsch climbed through the consolation bracket en route to a sixth-place finish. After dropping his first match to former NCAA Qualifier Nate Limmex of Purdue, Doetsch put together five-consecutive wins in the consolation bracket. After winning his first two consolation matches by pin and technical fall, Doetsch grinded out a 6-4 decision to keep his day going. He then earned a major decision victory before a sudden-victory win over Lehigh's Danny Moran. Because his match limit was reached, Doetsch ended the day finishing sixth.
Maryland also saw strong debuts from a pair of freshmen wrestlers. 125-pounders
King Sandoval and
Jarod Kosman each got their collegiate careers started with back-to-back wins in the championship bracket. Sandoval dominated his first two opponents, picking up a pair of pins. For Kosman, a 12-5 win in the first round was then followed by his first collegiate pin.
Danny Bertoni and
David-Brian Whisler also wrestled well, picking up a pair of victories in the 141-pound and 197-pound brackets respectively.
Maryland will be back in action on Nov. 10, traveling to Pennsylvania for the ESU Open. For full results from the Princeton Open, please see below.
