COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The ninth-ranked Maryland women's basketball team will open the 2018-19 season with a pair of matchups at the XFINITY Center this weekend. The Terps will tip off against Coppin State Friday at 7 p.m., then will host 2018 NCAA Tournament Team Dayton Sunday at 2 p.m.

The Terrapins have won their last nine straight season openers, dating back to 2009. They are 15-1 in season openers under head coach
Brenda Frese and 39-8 in season openers all time. Maryland is 16-0 in home openers at the XFINITY Center.

The Terps return four of their top five leading scorers from last year's 26-8 squad in
Kaila Charles,
Blair Watson,
Stephanie Jones and
Brianna Fraser.

The Terps were picked to win the Big Ten this year by both the league's head coaches and the media. Charles was unanimously named to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team and was named to the Cheryl Miller Award Watch List.
Channise Lewis was one of 20 point guards in the country named to the Nancy Lieberman Award Watch List.

Frese is entering her 17th season as the head coach of the Terrapins. She's led them to a record of 429-119 (.783). She is 14 wins from 500 in her 20-year head coaching career with a record of 486-149 (.765). Frese has led the Terrapins to 14 NCAA Tournaments in her 16 post seasons, three Final Fours, six Elite Eights, eight Sweet Sixteens and nine conference titles.

This is the 15th meeting between Maryland and Coppin State, with the Terrapins taking all previous matchups. Last year, the Terrapins won 113-49 in Baltimore on Dec. 20.

Maryland and Dayton are 1-1 in their all-time series. This is the two teams' first meeting since 2001.
