#9/10 Maryland Opens With Win Over Coppin State

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Freshman Taylor Mikesell scored 18 points, junior Stephanie Jones had 17 and the ninth-ranked Maryland women's basketball team picked up a season-opening win over Coppin State, 93-36,Friday night at the XFINITY Center.

Freshman Shakira Austin added 12 points, 21 rebounds and seven blocks in her Maryland debut. Junior Kaila Charles scored 11 points as the Terrapins opened the season with a win after going 26-8 last year.

"It was great to get so many players on the floor and involved," head coach Brenda Frese said. "You can see the potential of this team with our veterans and our young players. The impact is us growing together as a team. When you look at our unselfishness, we assisted on over 66 percent of our buckets. Our offensive rebounding was tremendous with us being plus 30 on the glass. I thought the inside-outside presence we were able to establish was clearly seen through Shakira and Stephanie [Jones]. We were really clicking on all cylinders."

The Terrapins returned four of their top five leading scorers – junior Blair Watson, senior Brianna Fraser, Jones and Charles, who led the team with 17.9 points and 8.1 rebounds per game.

Mikesell scored 10 points in the opening quarter, six off of two of her four threes, paving the way for an early 31-13 lead.

Coppin State (0-2) freshman E'Mya Price made the biggest impact and led the Eagles with 11 points. Coppin State had few answers for the Terrapins' taller frontcourt and was outrebounded 71-39.

Maryland was never threatened and a late free throw by Austin provided a 48-20 lead at the break. The Terrapins scored 27 points off 20 Eagles turnovers in the game.

Frese was able to rotate players freely in the second half and her team continued to overwhelm Coppin State. Another 3-pointer by Mikesell increased the margin to 75-32 with 8:22 left in the game.

The Terrapins improved to 15-0 all-time against Coppin State. The Terps have won their last 10 straight season openers, dating back to 2009. They are 16-1 in season openers under Frese and 40-8 in season openers all time. Maryland is 17-0 in home openers at the XFINITY Center.

The Terps were picked to win the Big Ten this year by both the league's head coaches and the media. Charles was unanimously named to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team and was named to the Cheryl Miller Award Watch List. Channise Lewis was one of 20 point guards in the country named to the Nancy Lieberman Award Watch List.

Frese is entering her 17th season as the head coach of the Terrapins. She's led them to a record of 430-119 (.783). She is 13 wins from 500 in her 20-year head coaching career with a record of 487-149 (.766). Frese has led the Terrapins to 14 NCAA Tournaments in her 16 post seasons, three Final Fours, six Elite Eights, eight Sweet Sixteens and nine conference titles.
