Terrapins Top Nittany Lions, 8-0, Saturday

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The Maryland softball team split its first two games of a three-game series at Penn State Saturday. After dropping the first match 8-3, the Terrapins bounced back with a dominating 8-0 victory in the second game of the day.

Maryland (11-20, 1-1 B1G) and Penn State (4-19, 1-1) will play their final game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Nittany Lions Softball Park and Beard Field.

Game One - Recap

The Nittany Lions used eight runs off 11 hits to capture an 8-3 win over Maryland Saturday afternoon.?

Penn State took the lead quickly, scoring five runs off six hits in the bottom of the first inning. The Nittany Lions tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the second to take a 7-0 lead.

Maryland got on the board with two runs in the top of the fourth when Brigette Nordberg led off with a double, then Amanda Brashear singled to send Nordberg to third. Skylynne Ellazar knocked in the Terps' first run when she sent a base hit down the right field line. Jacqui Pascual brought in Brashear with a fielder's choice later in the inning.

Penn State added another run in the bottom of the fifth, then Maryland scored its last run in the bottom of the seventh. Anna Kufta picked up the RBI to score Bailey Boyd.

Game Two - Recap

Kufta went 3-for-3 on the day with two runs and two RBI to help lead the Terrapins' offense in an 8-0 victory over Penn State. In the circle, Sydney Golden pitched five shutout innings, allowing just two hits and one walk.

Maryland broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the top of the second. Kufta doubled with one out, then scored when Mikayla Werahiko reached on a Penn State error. Brashear singled to bring in Werahiko, then Ellazar doubled to left to score Brashear. Nordberg singled to left to bring in Ellazar and make it a 4-0 lead.

The Terps added another four runs in the top of the fourth. Ellazar picked up a leadoff walk, then stole second. Pinch hitter Taylor Wilson singled to center to score Ellazar. After a wild pitch advanced runners to second and third, Kufta doubled to score both. After a Penn State pitching change, Weraiko singled to score Kufta.
