Sue Tyler Selected for Induction Into IWLCA Hall of Fame

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The first women's lacrosse coach in program history, Sue Tyler, who led the Terps to two National Championships, was selected for induction into the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association's 2018 Hall of Fame Class, the organization announced Thursday.

"This is an incredible honor not just for me but for all the great players that I coached," said Tyler. "I'm proud to have been a part of such a great institution like Maryland for so many years and I'm honored to receive this recognition by the IWLCA."

Tyler started the women's lacrosse program at Maryland, serving as the program's head coach from 1974, 1976-90. Over her 16 seasons at the helm, Tyler compiled a 195-61-3 record and won the program's first two National Championships, both the AIAW Championship in 1981 and the NCAA Championship in 1986, while reaching the National Championship nine times. For her efforts, Tyler was named the national Coach of the Year in both 1984 and 1986.

In addition to serving as the women's lacrosse coach at Maryland, Tyler was also the field hockey coach, accumulating a 143-88-26 record and winning the NCAA Championship in 1987. Tyler holds the distinction as the only Division 1 coach to win NCAA Championships in two different sports.

After retiring from coaching, Tyler transitioned to athletic administration, serving as an Associate Athletic Director at the University of Maryland and as Athletic Director at the University of Maine. She was an assistant coach for the U.S. National Team and served on the NCAA women's lacrosse committee, while also serving in volunteer leadership roles with the USWLA and US Lacrosse.

Tyler was inducted into the Maryland Athletics Hall of Fame in 1995 and the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1999.

The 2018 class will be formally enshrined on Thursday, November 15 during the IWLCA Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony during the IWLCA Annual Meetings at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The class also includes Patricia Price Genovese and Gillian Rattray,
