WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Alfred Bannister, Phil Spadafora and
Youssif Hemida all earned wins as the Maryland wrestling team (0-4, 0-1 B1G) opened its Big Ten slate with a 28-10 loss at No. 23 Purdue on Friday.
Spadafora's decision victory at 165 is the first B1G win of his career after serving a redshirt season last year. Hemida earned a decision in his first dual action of the season, while Bannister earned Maryland's lone bonus point win of the evening.
Purdue took an early advantage with a pair of bonus point victories at 125 and 133 pounds. Redshirt sophomore
Michael Doetsch then wrestled well for the Terps at 141, but ultimately fell to Nate Limmex by a 3-0 decision.
Bannister then put Maryland on the board with his major decision victory at 149 pounds. After receiving a point for unnecessary roughness in the first minute, Bannister closed out the frame with a final-minute takedown to take a 3-1 lead into the second.
Filius earned an escape in the second to cut Bannister's advantage to 3-2, but Maryland's redshirt senior then posted a six-point move to open the third and take a commanding 10-2 lead. One more takedown then sealed Bannister's 12-3 major decision win.
Adam Whitesell then impressed at 157, nearly knocking off No. 13 Griffin Parriott. An action-packed first period saw Whitesell down 6-5 after he recorded a pair of takedowns. Parriott's second-period escape gave him a two-point lead, but Whitesell cut it back to one after his escape in the third.
Maryland's redshirt senior was able to get in with a handful of takedown attempts late in the third, but Parriott's strong defense allowed him to escape with a decision victory.
Spadafora then put Maryland back in the win column with his decision victory at 165 pounds. After a scoreless first period, the redshirt freshman tallied nearly two minutes of riding time and a takedown in the second to take a 2-1 lead into the final period.
He then escaped at the beginning of the frame and held off Wysocki's attack to capture the first conference victory of his career.
A pair of bonus point victories for Purdue then extended the Boilermaker lead as the teams moved into the final bout of the evening, featuring Maryland's returning All-American and U23 World Silver Medalist,
Youssif Hemida.
After both heavyweights felt each other out for the first period, Hemida quickly took control of the match with an escape and takedown in the first 15 seconds of the second period. Aven was able to escape for Purdue, but Hemida's 3-1 advantage would prove to be enough for the senior.
It was just the second outing for Hemida since earning his silver medal at the World Championships in November. He previously placed fifth at the F&M Open.
Maryland's road trip will continue on Sunday, traveling to Indiana to take on the Hoosiers. The match, which features the opening of Indiana's Willkinson Hall, will take place at 2 p.m. It can be seen on BTN2GO ($).
