COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Four Terps earned decision victories but the Maryland wrestling team fell to Big Ten foe Michigan State, 28-12, on Sunday.
The day included wins from
Michael Doetsch,
Alfred Bannister,
Philip Spadafora and
Youssif Hemida. Bannister and Hemida are now tied with four dual victories each, with Hemida remaining undefeated in dual action this season.
The Spartans got out to an early lead with a pair of bonus point victories at 125 and 133 pounds. Seventh-ranked Rayvon Foley remained perfect in dual action with a win over Maryland's
Brandon Cray, while redshirt senior Anthony Tutolo topped Maryland's true freshman
Orion Anderson at 133.
Maryland was able to respond in the next two bouts, winning back-to-back contests at 141 and 149 pounds.
Wrestling at 141,
Michael Doetsch took a 3-0 lead after the first period via a takedown and technical violation. Austin Eicher was able to respond in the second, earning a quick escape and takedown of his own to tie the match at three.
Neither wrestler gained an advantage early in the third frame, and strong defense from Doetsch late in the period moved the two into sudden victory.
No points were scored in the first sudden victory period, which moved the two into TB-2. Doetsch was able to ride Eicher out in the first 30 seconds, gaining a big advantage moving into the second portion. He then tallied an escape midway through to secure the 4-3 victory.
The win was Doetsch's first Big Ten victory of his career and his first dual win this season.
Bannister was then able to keep things going for Maryland, earning a decision win of his own at 149. The redshirt senior picked up a pair of takedowns in the first period to take a 4-2 lead into the second. After MSU's Jaden Enriquez tallied an escape in the second frame, Bannister took a 4-3 lead into the final two minutes of the bout.
Bannister was then able to score five points in the final period after an escape and two more takedowns to capture the 9-4 victory.
Michigan State responded with a decision win at 157, but Spadafora got the Terps back on track with his win at 165.
Spadafora scored first to begin the match, but an escape and penalty point for MSU's Logan Ritchie tied things up after the first period. Maryland's redshirt freshman added an escape and a takedown in the second frame and looked to close out the bout leading 5-2.
Both wrestlers earned a point in the final period, giving Spadafora a 6-3 win and his third dual triumph of the season.
Hemida then closed out the day with a victory at heavyweight, topping Chase Beard with a 5-2 decision. Hemida's win was his team-best fourth conference win of the year, earning four decision victories since his return to dual action.
Maryland (0-7, 0-4 B1G) will be back in action on Saturday Feb. 2, hosting 16th-ranked Wisconsin at the XFINITY Center Pavilion.
