COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior
Madison Maguire scored two of the Terps' three goals to lead the second-ranked Maryland field hockey squad (12-1, 4-0 B1G) to a 3-0 victory over No. 6 Iowa Friday afternoon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
Maguire scored the Terrapins' first and third goals to lead them to their ninth straight victory and third straight over a top 10 opponent. Friday's win was also Maryland's second consecutive shutout after a 2-0 decision over No. 3 Connecticut Sunday.
"What an amazingly strong team Iowa is," head coach Missy Meahrg said. "Their players had exceptional individual skills. I think Maryland was super opportunistic. We made some good adjustments at halftime, which put us in more possession control of the game in the second half. It's an honor that the women are playing well. As I've said to you guys a lot over the past two weeks, we're getting better and better and learning from all the experiences."
Maguire, whose sister, Makenna, plays for the Hawkeyes (9-3, 3-1) opened the scoring 4:24 into the second quarter. After a stoppage in play for a video referral, Maguire brought the ball into the circle and dove to send the ball over the goal line from just in front of the goalkeeper.
Maryland held a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Eleven minutes into the third quarter, sophomore
Taylor Mason made it a two-goal lead the Terps. Junior
Brooke DeBerdine brought the ball up the right side and sent Mason a hard pass from outside the circle. Mason finished it off to score her first goal of the year.
Iowa pulled its goalkeeper with 4:09 to play. A minute and 21 seconds later, freshman
Emma DeBerdine brought the ball in from the left side and sent it to sophomore
Bibi Donraadt in front of the cage, who tapped it to Maguire for the final touch and score.
Senior goalkeeper
Noelle Frost, the current Division I Defensive Player of the Week, made six saves. Junior defender
Hannah Bond picked up a defensive save.
Maryland took 13 shots to Iowa's 12 and both teams had three penalty corners.
Earlier this week, Frost was named both Big Ten and NFHCA Division I Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this year. She allowed just one goal in over 154 minutes in two top five victories for Maryland last week. She saved 83.3 percent of her shots faced and picked up her fourth shutout of the year.
Maguire leads the Terrapins with eight goals this season. Sophomore
Linda Cobano has scored seven goals andÂ
Bodil Keus andÂ
Emma DeBerdine have each scored four goals. Twelve total Terps have scored.

Head Coach Missy Meharg
Opening statement:
"What an amazingly strong team Iowa is. Their players had exceptional individual skills. I think Maryland was super opportunistic. We made some good adjustments at halftime, which put us in more possession control of the game in the second half."
On first half possessions:
"I think we just had to stop fouling, both teams. You could hear it with stick fouls and it becomes a choppy game, so you're asking it become an official's game. We always try to stay away from that. We simulate a lot in training, you know I officiate, and I just make the silliest calls and create havoc. That's a team that is going to go very far in the Big Tens and very far in the NCAAs. I think they're exceptionally good, I think they [Iowa] actually went a little bit tired, and I would anticipate that it's from the trip and the schedule. I'm sure they'll be fresher when we see them again. But Maryland needs to play a better possession style against this team if we see them in the Big Tens."
On taking a lead in the Big Ten standings:
"Yeah, I wish I could tell you it's great. I mean, it's not first until the end, right. So it is what it is. Now I just think games like this are funky, you don't need a lot of stats but if you're opportunistic, you're going to make it come. We're still working diligently on our goal scoring and I think in the first half, that open goal we had, I'm sure people were like if we had that over again and that could've changed the game a little bit for us. It's an honor that the women are playing well. As I've said to you guys a lot over the past two weeks, we're getting better and better and learning from all the experiences."
On the post-game team reaction:
"We have a young nephew, one of our players. He was–just yesterday–found out that he's cancer free, 'little' Griff Greenwalt, Kyler's [Greenwalt] nephew. So we were all very excited. He actually gave the turtle to Taylor, he had to find number nine. I think that's probably what the big scream was, so super happy for that family [Greenwalt] and for Kyler and her family. It's a special time."
Sophomore Taylor Mason
On getting her first goal of the season:
"I was just really pumped because I think it was the goal to get us to settle down a little bit, it wasn't as close of a game. I think it was really good that our team worked hard and capitalized when we needed to. It was really fun to see all my teammates afterwards, everyone was freaking out, so it was really fun."
On what pushed her to get into the shooting circle on her scoring run:
"I saw that nobody was up, and I saw Brooke (DeBerdine) going for it and I really wanted to get it, so I decided to go up and support her so we can get outcomes. Our focus for this game was to get the outcomes we wanted."
On coach's advice during a high possession game:
"We just had to get the ball and transfer it around and pass it forward when we needed to go forward, but didn't force it."
On team depth from the bench to the starters:
"For everyone going in, even if you didn't play one or two quarters, you go in and everyone is still playing like they've played the whole game. They keep the momentum up, so there's no difference with who played the whole game and who just came in."
Senior Madison Maguire
On playing against her sister :
"It was awesome. I saw her on the field, I was cheering her on a little bit, but obviously not too much."
On Maryland being in sole possession of first place in the Big Ten:
"It's huge for us. The team who is first in the Big Ten gets a bye in the Big Ten tournament, so that's key. You don't want to play three games in a weekend, so we'll hopefully be first, get that bye and then go on."
On the team's depth from the bench to the starters:
"I think it's great that all of us were scoring. I think it shows our depth on the team, it's not just one team is the highest scorer, so everyone's sharing the ball and we're all excited when we do score."
