COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The second-ranked Maryland field hockey squad used all of its depth and cruised past Indiana, 6-0, Sunday afternoon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. With the win, the Terps (13-1, 5-0 B1G) won their 10
th straight match and picked up their third consecutive shutout.
Twenty-three Terrapins saw action as Maryland scored at least once in all four quarters. Sophomore
Linda Cobano and redshirt sophomore
Mayv Clune each scored twice and Clune added an assist.
"It was a great team win," head coach
Missy Meharg said. "Indiana has a new coaching staff and they are tactically coming along well. We hoped beforehand that this would be an opportunity for us to play a lot of players. We were very pleased with all of the women and their performance during the match. Great for Skye (Joegriner) to take three shots and to make three saves in the fourth quarter, so that's a real bonus for us as we continue to defend our goal cage."
Cobano put the Terps on the board 5:18 into the game when she took a pass from senior
Jen Bleakney on the right side and flung it into the top part of the cage for the score.
Just seven minutes later, sophomore
Bibi Donraadt made it a 2-0 lead for Maryland with 3:00 left in the first quarter. Clune brought the ball into the circle near the top and sent it to Donraadt on the left side. Donraadt took a few steps and pulled a shot past the keeper for the score.
With 6:08 left in the second quarter, the Terrapins earned a penalty corner. Donraadt inserted on the play and sent it to
Nathalie Fiechter, who sent a pass to Clune on the far post for the goal. The Terps led 3-0 at halftime.
Just 6:25 into the third quarter, Cobano struck again when she banged in a shot off a penalty corner, set up by senior
Madison Maguire and Bleakney to make it 4-0.
Three minutes later, the Terrapins were awarded another penalty corner. This time,
Lizzy Dessoye took the ball off a rebounded shot and deflected it in off a defender.
With 9:12 left in the game, Clune added her second score of the day when intercepted the ball near the top of the circle, brought it into the circle and scored to make it 6-0.
Senior goalkeeper
Noelle Frost made a save in her 37 minutes in goal. Sophomore goalkeeper
Skye Joegriner made three, all in the fourth quarter, in her 23 minutes in goal. Senior Kelee Lepage picked up a defensive save as well.
Maryland took 19 shots to the Hoosiers' six. The Terps had eight corners and allowed Indiana (4-9, 1-5) one.
The Terrapins wore pink accessories to support breast cancer awareness.
Frost was named both Big Ten and NFHCA Division I Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this year. She allowed just one goal in over 154 minutes in two top five victories for Maryland last week.

Head Coach Missy Meharg
Opening statement:
"It was a great team win. Indiana has a new coaching staff and they are tactically coming along well.
On their first time scoring off a corner since they played Princeton:
"It hasn't been in the back of my mind at all. I think when you're scoring counterattack field goals it's much more fun for the fans and for the players, so that's all fine and I'm happy we scored on penalty corners today."
On putting in players who don't usually get a lot of time:
"I think that every young woman who comes into this program imagines themselves doing what they did their whole life, which is to be on the field the whole time. So it's a matter of making sure that we keep everybody as motivated, inspired and keep their roles very clear. We really work hard on a life lesson which is, control what you can. You can control your attitude and control your work grade, and I'm really happy with the women as they have come a long way with that."
Redshirt-Sophomore Forward Mayv Clune
On using different set pieces or strategies to score on penalty corners:
"I think the biggest thing is going into each practice with the intensity of the game so when we come in we are ready to put that pressure on ourselves and be able to score. I think we focused on keeping things simple and definitely focusing on the inserts being on point, the stick stoppers being in the positions that we needed to be, and the hitters hitting to those points and the people protecting being at those points as well. I think that we just zoned in on everyone doing their job and when we are able to do that we are able to be successful."
On what is going through their mind as forward, getting the opportunity to score:
"I think also not just doing it for yourself but giving those selfless passes or running those selfless leads because we are a team together, we're not just a singular person who does it all by themselves so I think when we play for each other that is when we are the most successful."
On what has been impressive about the defensive end:
"The mentality to be calm in the defense. They are under unbelievable pressure and they are able to just think about the simple, do the simple, and find the pass. I think they have a great mental attitude towards everything and they know what they have to do and they do their job."
On how they stay ready at all times:
"I think the most important thing is always expected to be ready at all times because you never know if you'll need to go in those last five minutes and be a game changer or they're going to call upon you to take a corner. If you always just mentally b turned on, whether you do a couple sprints on the sideline or grab a stick and a ball and do a couple passes with a teammate. Just always be ready to serve the team in any way possible."
On getting past the Indiana goalkeeper:
"It definitely just takes poise and being calm and always knowing where you need to be, whether you need to frame the goal cage in goal scoring positions like on the stroke mark or on the two goal posts. I think we did a really good job of being deliberate and diligent with filling those spaces and when were able to do that were able to succeed no matter what."
On what the team support from the sidelines means to the players on the field:
"We do it for each other."
Senior Forward Lizzy Dessoye
On what is going through their mind as forward, getting the opportunity to score:
"It's mostly staying calm in the circle as Missy said, our defenders are gritty so it is fun to practice against them in practice too. We are taking what we do in practice into the games and using our opponents and staying calm and gritty and scoring those goals."
On what has been impressive about the defensive end:
"I think that they know what they are good at and they continue to work on those things even though they are good at them and make sure that they are on point every single game which is really what we need. I think what they are doing is outstanding, they are working hard, making sure they are communicating to us because the forwards need to get back and help too and their communication and work ethic is really helping us with these games and have those shutouts."
On the depth of the offense:
"We have a really deep bench. Someone asked what it's like for people who don't really score, we just make sure in practice that we are practicing like we are starters. We have that mentality that the team needs us and we are going to work hard and I think it goes to show that our forwards are working hard and anyone on the forward line can rip a shot and score, which is useful."
On what the team support from the sidelines means to the players on the field:
"That's helpful. It goes beyond words how helpful that is. You don't think about your fatigue when you hear your teammates or your coaches or anyone even the fans cheering for us. That energy makes us on the field connect more. We get hyped but we also connect and want to keep fighting for the girls on the sidelines for everyone else."
