Reese & Forbes Inducted Into National Lacrosse Hall of Fame

HUNT VALLEY, Md. -- Maryland women's lacrosse legends Cathy Reese and Sarah Forbes were etched in lacrosse lore on Saturday night as they were formally enshrined into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame.

Reese and Forbes, who were teammates in College Park from 1995-97 were celebrated at the The Grand Lodge in Hunt Valley, Md. on Saturday evening as part of a nine person Hall of Fame class that included fellow women Kara Ariza Cooke and Rachael Becker DeCecco.

The Terrapins head coach for the last 13 seasons, Reese is a four-time winner of the IWLCA's national coach of the year award and a 12-time conference coach of the year who has led Maryland to five national championships. She ranks as the Terps' all-time winningest coach, with a 270-22 record at Maryland, and has a career record of 301-51 in 16 overall seasons as a head coach. Through 2019, she has produced eight Tewaaraton Trophy winners, 22 National Players of the Year and 64 All-Americans.

"I love the athletes that I have a chance to work with," Reese said. "Coaching is about relationships. To share the sport and to be able to help them grow during their college careers is something that's really special. The best part of coaching is working with a team of players who are out there striving for something that's bigger than themselves."

A native of Australia, Forbes became a three-time All-American at the University of Maryland and a pioneer in creating the pipeline from Down Under to College Park that resulted in players like Jen Adams, Courtney Hobbs and Sarah Mollison.  Forbes was the national offensive player of the year in 1997 as well as the ACC's player of the year. She helped lead the Terps to three straight NCAA titles (1995-97) during her career, as well as the ACC championship in 1997. Forbes was named to the NCAA's 25th Anniversary Team in 2006.

"Lacrosse has brought so many friends, mentors, memories and experiences from all over the world, and given my life purpose and meaning," said Forbes. "It's taught me determination, resiliency, understanding, and compassion, and made me a better teacher, parent, partner and coach. It's endless, what lacrosse has brought to my life."

Reese and Forbes were joined by many of their teammates for their Hall of Fame weekend. Jen Adams served as Reese's presenter and former Maryland coach Cindy Timchal was Forbes' presenter. Reese's former players Taylor Cummings, Erica Evans, Nadine Hadnagy, Alice Mercer and Megan Taylor were also all in attendance as well as Reese's coaching staff.

Earlier in the day, Reese's 2020 team defeated Team Canada, 12-8, at the Team USA Fall Classic. Maryland got hat-tricks from senior Brindi Griffin and freshmen Shaylan Ahearn and Hannah Leubecker and strong play in the cage from Maddie McSally and Madison Hine
