COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Fans and supporters of Maryland wrestling got a highly anticipated first look at the program under the direction of first-year head coach Alex Clemsen. The red team defeated the black team, 26-10, in this year's Red-Black Wrestle-Offs.
"I expect our guys to do exactly what they did today," said Head Coach Alex Clemsen. "Prepare really well and give themselves opportunities to score points. I thought we had good action and a really good effort. Even the guys that came short on the stick, nobody was hanging their hand. Nobody was moping. There was a good fight up and down the lineup. If we do what we did today all year, we're going to have opportunities to win matches and compete at a higher level. I'm proud of my guys and staff who are working really hard to get the best out of of our kids to keep them in a position to go out and represent us."
The red team took an early advantage as Orion Anderson secured a win by technical fall over PJ Truntich in the first bout of the day. Anderson maintained steady leads over Truntich but clinched the victory in the third period, gaining a point with riding time.
Decklan Fischer took the first major decision victory of the day, beating Anthony Sountis 12-4 in the second bout of the intrasquad dual.
Danny Bertoni and Garrett Fisk took home wins for team red and team black, respectively, in the early exhibition matches.
Kevin Makosy earned the most dominant win of the day over Connor Bowes, earning a technical fall victory, 18-2, in the first period. The red team continued to pile on the points as King Sandoval earned a commanding 21-4 technical fall win over James Ruona. Sandoval, who finished third in Greco at the U23 World Team Trials this summer, showed off his exciting wrestling style with a cement mixer takedown in the first period as he established himself as a force at 133.
Hunter Baxter continued to add points for the red team, earning the final major decision victory of the day, beating Quinn Devaney 8-0 in an exhibition bout, while the black team rallied around Michael Doetsch who earned a 3-1 decision over Lucas Cordio.
Despite the black team's late rally, the red team finished the day with two tight matches as Kyle Cochran earned a 11-7 decision over Jonathan Spadafora at 165 and Kyle Jasenski earned a 5-2 decision over Philip Spadafora in the final match of the day.
