ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Michigan scored three goals, including two in the second half, to secure a Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinal victory over Maryland Sunday afternoon.
The result ends a historic season for Maryland as the Terrapins clinched their best-ever finish in the Big Ten with a sixth place finish in the conference (5-5-1). It was Maryland's first-ever appearance in the Big Ten Tourney.
"I'm really proud of my team today," said head coach Ray Leone. "They had a great season and fought with Maryland pride down to the very last second of the game against an excellent Michigan team."
Goalkeeper Erin Seppi was busy all afternoon, making 10 saves including several diving stops to keep the Terps within striking distance. After a quiet opening half, the Wolverines finally broke through in the 36th minute on a goal from Danielle Wolfe.
Trailing 1-0 at the start of the second half, the Terps pressed for the equalizer but the hosts extended their lead with a strike from Meredith Haakenson in the 55th minute. Michigan would tack on one more goal in the 85th minute to put the game out of reach.
"This season was a great step forward for our program to make the Big Ten tournament for the first time ever," said Leone. "I'm truly grateful for the tremendous leadership of the seniors and that they were able to be a part of a postseason competition."
The Wolverines outshot the Terps 22-6, while holding a 6-3 edge in corners.
Maryland ends the season with a winning record of 9-8-3,, the first winning record for a Maryland team since the 2012 season.
