Maryland Edged Out in Big Ten Semifinals

STATE COLLEGE, Pa.  –  The Maryland field hockey squad (16-3) dropped a tight, one-goal match at Penn State Friday in the Big Ten Semifinals at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex. The Nittany Lions scored in the opening period, then Maryland's numerous chances to score the equalizer fell just short.

The Terrapins came out firing, taking five shots in the first five minutes. Penn State's Bree Bednarski tapped in a loose ball off the rebound just 7:24 into the match for the game's only goal.

Maryland continued to put pressure on fifth-seeded Penn State (8-11), taking 15 total shots to the Nittany Lions' seven. The Terrapins put the ball over the goal line three times in the fourth quarter and all three plays were waved off.

"The outcome is super disappointing for our team and for our staff," head coach Missy Meharg said. "We had quality chances. Having multiple goals reversed and dominating in such a way, the outcome was a stinger.  Penn State played great defense. They are contagious in their energy. We're focused on preparing for the NCAAs."

The top-seeded Terps also took eight penalty corners to two for Penn State.

Penn State advanced to the Big Ten Championship game Sunday at 2 p.m. on BTN. Iowa and Northwestern will meet in the second Semifinal Saturday.

The Terrapins finished 7-1 in Big Ten play this season to win the Big Ten regular season title. Maryland has won 26 conference titles, including the 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019 titles since joining the Big Ten.

Three Terrapins earned All-Big Ten honors Wednesday. Senior Madison Maguire, junior Bodil Keus and freshman Emma DeBerdine were recognized by the league.

Maguire was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and Keus was voted Defensive Player of the Year by the league's head coaches. Maguire, Keus and DeBerdine were named to the All-Big Ten First Team.

Maryland will learn its NCAA Tournament matchup during the NCAA Division I Field Hockey Selection Show Sunday at 10 p.m. ET on NCAA.com.
