COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Josh Ugalde won by major decision at 174 pounds but the Maryland wrestling team fell to fourth-ranked Michigan (11-1, 7-1 B1G), 34-4, on Friday night.
Ugalde collected eight near-fall points in the second period to distance himself from Michigan's Justin Hughes. The win was his second dual victory of the year, tying his career-high that was set in 2017-18.
Maryland was able to stay within striking distance in a handful of matches in the meet, falling by decision in five bouts. The Wolverines got out in front early, taking the opening match at 125 by six. Maryland's
Brandon Cray nearly secured a takedown in the first period, but ultimately fell to Michigan's Jack Medley.
Top-ranked Stevan Micic then kept the momentum going for the Wolverines at 133, winning by fall in the first period. Michigan then tallied a pair of decisions from sixth-ranked Kanen Storr at 141 and Malik Amine at 149.
Amine nearly fell to Maryland's
Alfred Bannister, who picked up four takedowns in the final period to even the score. However, Amine would hold on with an 11-9 decision to keep the Wolverine momentum in tact.
A pair of top-10 ranked Wolverines then picked up bonus point victories at 157 and 165, but Ugalde was able to respond for the Terps with a bonus point victory of his own. Both of the redshirt junior's conference wins have come by way of bonus points.
Michigan then closed out the night with a trio of wins at 184, 197 and 285. The heavyweight bout saw the fourth-straight ranked matchup for Maryland's senior
Youssif Hemida. It was also the third-straight match for Hemida against a top-10 opponent. The road will not get any easier for the returning All-American, as he's slated to match up with 15
th-ranked Matt Voss in Sunday's match at George Mason.
Maryland will wrestle the Patriots on Sunday, with the match scheduled to begin at noon in Fairfax, Va. For full results from Maryland's dual against fourth-ranked Michigan, please see below.
