COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Four Maryland wrestlers took home decision victories, but the Maryland wrestling team fell to 16th-ranked Rutgers (12-6, 5-4 B1G), 25-12, on Friday.
The Terps saw wins from
Brandon Cray (125),
Philip Spadafora (165),
Niko Cappello (197) and
Youssif Hemida (285). It was back-to-back victories for Cray and Hemida, who each picked up victories in Maryland's dual victory over George Mason last weekend.
Cray's win got Maryland off to a fast start, as he picked up a decision victory over Rutgers' Shane Metzler. Maryland's redshirt sophomore got out to an early lead after he picked up a first period takedown, and carried a 2-1 lead into the second frame.
He then escaped to start the second, but Metzler scored a takedown to even the score entering the third. Starting the third on top, Cray then rode Metzler out for the entire period to lock up the riding time point and take home a 4-3 victory.
Cray has now tallied a pair of dual conference wins for the second time in his career. He has also won consecutive bouts for the second time since entering Maryland's dual lineup last season.
The Scarlet Knights then distanced themselves from the Terps behind strong performances from their three ranked wrestlers, including fourth-ranked Nick Suriano (133) and top-ranked Anthony Ashnault (141).
Spadafora was then able to get Maryland back in the win column with his decision victory at 165. He took an early lead with a first-period takedown, but Rutgers Stephan Glasgow was able to even it up at three following the end of the first period.
Trailing 4-3 after Glasgow earned an escape, Spadafora won a frantic scramble on the edge of the mat to take a 5-4 lead in the final seconds of the second period. He was then able to hold Glasgow off in the final two minutes to grab his third conference victory of the season. The three Big Ten wins ties him with
Alfred Bannister for the second-most on the team.
The XFINITY Center was then brought to its feet once again in the 197-pound bout, as Cappello's decision earned him his first dual victory of the season.
After a scoreless first period, Cappello put the first points on the board with a reversal midway through the second frame. Rutgers' Max Wright then tallied a pair of escapes to tie the bout at three entering the final 30 seconds.
Cappello then got in on a leg and finished off a tough takedown on the edge of the mat with 20 seconds remaining to secure the late decision victory. It was Cappello's first conference win of the season and the second of his career.
Hemida then closed out the night with his 10th victory of the season, topping Christian Colucci with an 8-2 decision. The senior tallied three takedowns including one in the final period to earn his team-best sixth dual win and fourth conference victory.
Maryland will close out its regular season on Sunday, traveling to Rider for a non-conference bout in Lawrenceville, N.J. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
