#8 Maryland to Meet #10 Iowa in Big Ten Championship

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.  –  Top-seeded Maryland (28-3) will take on No. 2-seeded Iowa (25-6) Sunday at 6 p.m. in the Terps' fifth straight Big Ten Championship game since they joined the league in 2015.

The Terps, who are ranked No. 8 in both polls, will tip off against the 10th-ranked Hawkeyes Sunday evening at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The top 10 matchup will be televised around the world on ESPN2, the Watch ESPN app and WatchESPN.com.

The Terrapins advanced to their fifth straight Big Ten Championship game with a 73-72 victory over fourth-seeded Michigan Saturday in the Big Ten Semifinals.

Junior Kaila Charles made two free throws with 10.3 seconds left, freshman Shakira Austin notched a block with 1.5 seconds to go and Maryland's defense led the Terps past Michigan (21-11) down the stretch.

This is the Terps' eighth appearance in a conference title game in the 17 seasons under head coach Brenda Frese. So far, they are 5-2 in conference tournament finals under Frese.

Maryland is 13-1 all-time in the Big Ten Tournament after winning the 2015, 2016 and 2017 Tournament titles. The Terps are 10-1 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse and Frese is 13-2 in the Big Ten Tournament.

Saturday's win was also Maryland's 1,000th in its 48 years as a program. Maryland is the 12th Division I program to reach the 1,000 win mark.

Earlier in the day Saturday, Charles was one of 15 of the top players in the country named to the Wooden Award National Ballot.

The Terrapins own the all-time series over Iowa, 6-2, but the Hawkeyes took this year's only regular season meeting, 86-73, in Iowa City on Feb. 17. It was a one-point game with 3:25, but free throws down the stretch proved to be the difference for Iowa.

Frese was voted Big Ten Coach of the Year, for the third time in her career, by her peers and the media. Taylor Mikesell was voted Big Ten Freshman of the Year by the league's head coaches. She also earned All-Big Ten First Team honors by the media and Second Team honors by the coaches.

Charles was a unanimous First Team selection. Junior Stephanie Jones earned All-Big Ten Honorable Mention honors by the coaches and Second Team honors by the media. Austin earned Honorable Mention honors by the media and was named to the All-Big Ten Defensive Team. She and Mikesell made the All-Big Ten Freshman team.

Mikesell has made 90 three-pointers this year and needs to make just two to top the program season record of 91 made by Kristi Toliver in 2008-09. Austin has 82 blocks this season, more than any Terrapin in a single season since 1978-79.
