Thompson, Santiago, Blackall Earn All-B1G Honors On Sunday of B1G Outdoors

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Greg Thompson became Maryland's first-ever men's Big Ten Individual Champion, taking first in the discus throw with a heave of 57.76m. This feat also puts Thompson in the record books as the first men's conference champion in the discus event since 1989 and the eighth conference champion in discus in school history.  Since joining the conference in 2015, Maryland has had individual champions on the women's team with Thea LaFond (2x '15) and Amber Melville ('15).  Thompson's victory earned him status as 2019 Men's Outdoor Track & Field All-Big Ten First Team.

Xahria Santiago became the back-to-back runner up in the 400m hurdles after earning a silver medal for the second year in a row. Santiago leaned at the line in a tight finish that only separated the winner by .01 seconds. Santiago ran a season best of 57.69 seconds.

Leah Blackall joined Santiago in earning All-Big Ten second team honors with her 2nd place finish in the women's triple jump. Blackall improved her marks on almost every attempt to secure the runner up position with a leap of 12.96m.

The men's 4x400m relay squad ran to a third place finish to earn a spot on the podium in a medal position. The team comprised of Aaron Robinson, Colin Rowe, Hazem Miawad, and Kameron Jones crossed the line in 3:08.14.

Kameron Jones set a new school record in the 400m dash en route to a fifth place finish in this event. Jones ran 46.17 in a close finish. Freshman Dashawn Morris finished seventh in the 400m dash running 46.86.

The women tallied some additional points in a variety of events and relays. Mikella Lefebvre-Oatis finished 4th in the high jump competition clearing 1.73m (5'8"). Alexandra Lucki crossed the line 5th in the 1500m run, battling to the finish line in a time of 4:21.19.

Both women's relay squads finished in scoring positions. The 4x400m relay team of Xahria Santiago, Thaila Cooper, Cheyenne Jones, and Venida Fagan ran 3:40.55 to finish 6th. The 4x100m relay squad of Imani Gray, Jaida Smith, Venida Fagan, and Bria Mack earned an 8th place finish crossing the line in 45.94.

In the women's 5k competition, Brit Lang finished off her season running 17:26.95 and senior Emily Bracher ran a season best 17:56.35.

Nate Moore and Carlos Vanzego finished back to back in the men's triple jump competition. Moore jumped a season best of 14.95m to finish 10th and Vanzego jumped 14.90m for 11th place.

The women matched their best team finish since 2015 and the men doubled their points from last year's conference championships.

The Big Ten Network will air tape delay coverage of the championships on Wednesday, May 15th at 7:00pm E.T.

The team will have a week of rest and training before heading to the NCAA East Regional held in Jacksonville, FL on May 23.
