COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior AJ Lee hit a walk-off two-run homer as the Maryland baseball team (26-27, 10-12) defeated Iowa (30-20, 12-10), 8-6, at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium
What to Know
- Walk. Off. The first of the season for the Terps came on an AJ Lee two-run shot to left field with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Maryland had blown a 6-2 lead in the top of the inning. It was the first walk-off hit of Lee's career.
- Lee had three hits, three runs scored and three RBIs. Not too shabby from a senior captain.
- Maryland got a fantastic start from senior right-hander Hunter Parsons. The Fruitland, Md., native tossed eight innings and gave up a pair of earned runs while striking out four.
- Lee led off the first with a single and then stole second. After moving to third on a wild pitch, Lee scored on a Taylor Wright single. Wright then stole second and scored on a two-out Michael Pineiro single.
- In the third, freshman Maxwell Costes hit a two-run shot, his 11th of the season, to make it 4-0. Costes leads all Big Ten freshman in home runs, doubles, slugging percentage, RBIs and total bases.
- Iowa plated single runs off Parsons in the fifth and sixth before the Terps grabbed a run in the seventh. Lee put down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt to plate Chris Alleyne. The Terps then got another run on a Pineiro sac fly in the eighth to make it 6-2.
- Parsons got a strike out to get out of a jam in the eighth on his 123rd pitch and celebrated fittingly in the direction of his dugout. Another big performance by a Terps' senior.
- In the ninth, Parsons was pulled after plunking the first batter. Maryland closer John Murphy subsequently gave up four runs to allow Iowa to tie the game.
- In the bottom half of the inning. Josh Maguire singled to start the frame before Benjamin Cowles bunted him over. Lee then hit a no-doubter, his fifth home run of the season.
Quotable: Rob Vaughn on Hunter Parsons
"I've coached for about 10 years and coached a lot of good players and a lot good people. Hunter Parsons is one of the best human beings I have ever been around. The way he goes about his business. The way he treats his teammates. The kind of man he has grown to be. It's a testament to his family and the kind of people they are. That is just salt of the earth awesome people. Hunt has worked his tail off. I told him after the game, 'I'm not ready to be done coaching you, period' Love that kid. So incredibly proud of what he's done."
Other Stuff
- Lee's walk-off was Maryland first win in the last at-bat since May 9, 2018 when Nick Dunn singled to score Taylor Wright against Towson. It is the first walk-off homer since Brandon Gum hit a solo shot to beat Penn State on April 14, 2017.
- Taylor Wright hit his 20th double of the season in the ballgame. He is now tied for fourth all-time in single season doubles in Maryland history.
- Randy Bednar did not have a hit tonight, but still reasons to point out how good he's been this season. Bednar's 31 extra-base hits this season is tied for tenth in a single season in Maryland history.
- Parsons has now tossed 97 innings this season, the seventh-most in a single season in Maryland history. The top-seven innings pitched seasons in Maryland history have all come in the last six seasons.

- Maryland athletic trainer Evan Lobato interviewed Maryland Baseball Network's Connor Newcomb before the game about his inspiration and about The Avengers. Yes, we have the most media friendly trainer in the country.
- Maryland junior Caleb Walls introduced "Plank" to the dugout. "Plank" is a plank of wood with eyes and a smiley face, inspired by the mid-2000s Cartoon Network classic Ed, Edd n Eddy. "Plank" is now 1-0.
