Thompson Leads Terps Past Iowa

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland baseball team defeated Iowa, 8-4, to win the series over the Hawkeyes Friday night at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.

What to Know

  • Maryland's offense plated eight runs in support of redshirt-sophomore Zach Thompson, who gave up two earned runs over six and two thirds innings with seven strikeouts.
  • The Terps got off to a quick start when Maxwell Costes hit a two-run homer to right center, his 12th of the season.
  • After Iowa cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the third, the Terps plated three in the bottom half. Senior Taylor Wright hit a single up the middle to open the frame before Costes walked. Justin Vought's single to the pitcher set up Josh Maguire, who tripled to right field to clear the bases.
  • Sophomore Randy Bednar's 11th long ball of the season made it 6-1 in the fourth. The Terps then got another run in the inning on a Michigan error to make it 7-1.
  • Iowa grabbed a run back in the fifth and the seventh, but senior AJ Lee made it an 8-3 game in the eighth with his third homer in as many games.
  • Thompson departed after getting the first two outs of the seventh. After Iowa scored a run off Elliott Zoellner, right-hander Mark DiLuia recorded the final seven outs of the game, including striking out the side in the eighth. DiLuia struck out five in total, his season high.
  • Taylor Wright reached base four times and scored three times.
  • The Terps played sensational defense on the night, turning a pair of huge double plays and using a 7-6-2 relay home to end the Iowa fifth.

Other Stuff

  • Thompson's seven strikeouts were his most since he fanned a career high nine against Maine on Feb. 22.
  • Costes has now slugged 12 homers. The Maryland freshman record is 17, set by Jason Maxey.
  • Lee has been on fire in three games this week. The senior is 8-for-13 with six runs scored, six RBIs and three home runs. He is slugging 1.308. Can you even do that?
  • Lee has homered in his last three games, the first Terp to do that since Marty Costes in 2017.
  • Maryland PA announcer Matt Noble continues to feed the press box during this final home series of the season. On Friday, it was pizza rolls. Tonight, it was brownie bars that included chocolate, cookie dough and graham cracker crust. So good. Shout out to Matt and his wife, the actual creator of these delightful treats, Stacia.
  • Plank is now 2-0.
  • Maryland remains tied for seventh in the Big Ten standings as it looks to qualify for the Big Ten Tournament. The top eight teams qualify. If the Terps win, they are in. Nuff said.
