Terps Sweep Iowa, Secure No. 6 Seed in B1G Tournament

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland baseball team took down Iowa, 10-8, to sweep the series at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Terps secured a place in the Big Ten Tournament next week at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb.

Maryland will be the No. 6 seed in the tournament and take on third-seeded Illinois Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. ET. The Terps took the series against the Fighting Illini in Champaign earlier this season.

What to Know

  • What a college baseball game. Maryland led 4-1 after three before Iowa tied it with a three-run homer in the fourth. The Terps then extended the lead back out to 8-4 before Iowa hit a game trying grand slam in the eighth. In the bottom half of the eighth, sophomore Chris Alleyne hit a two-run double to give the Maryland the lead for good.
  • A solo homer opened the scoring for Iowa in the first before the Terps struck back with consecutive homers in the bottom half. Sophomore Michael Pineiro's opposite field jack tied the game before Justin Vought followed him with a solo shot, his ninth of the season.
  • The Terps tacked on two more runs in the third. Senior AJ Lee reached on an error before Randy Bednar walked. Lee then stole third and scored on a wild pitch. Bednar ended up scoring on a Pineiro squeeze bunt.
  • A Benjamin Cowles sac fly gave the Terps a 7-4 lead after five. Cowles was against came through with a sac fly in the seventh to make it an 8-4 game.
  • After a solid start, Terps starter Tyler Blohm gave up four earned runs over three and two thirds innings before Trevor LaBonte entered. LaBonte was fairly clean over his outing, at one point retiring eight straight Hawkeyes. The freshman ran into trouble in the eighth and loaded the bases before the ball was turned over to freshman lefty Andrew Vail. Vail gave up a grand slam to Tanner Wetrich as Iowa tied the game.
  • Alleyne's heroics in the eighth were set up by a Maxwell Costes walk and Justin Vought HBP. With two outs, Alleyne ripped a double into right field to plate both runners. The double was Alleyne's first double at home since March 24.
  • Senior John Murphy closed out the game in the ninth for his 11th save of the year. The Sheriff has tied Kevin Mooney's 2015 season for the third-most saves in a single season in program history.

Other Stuff

  • Maryland honored five seniors: AJ Lee, Taylor Wright, John Murphy, Hunter Parsons and student manager Micah Saltzberg in senior day festivities before first pitch. Thank you to all five for their contributions to the Maryland baseball program.
  • Lee finished with two doubles, a walk and two runs scored. Wright finished with two hits and an RBI. Murphy finished with his 11th save. Parsons was incredible Thursday night. What a weekend for the seniors.
  • Speaking of seniors, Lee's week was incredible. The shortstop slashed .588/.632/1.235 with eight runs scored, 10 hits and six RBIs. That's outrageous.
  • Maryland secured a berth in the Big Ten Tournament, which begins Wednesday, May 22 at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb. It is Maryland's fourth appearance in the Big Ten Tournament in its five seasons in the league. The Terps have made at least the semifinals in all three of their appearances.
  • Maryland head coach Rob Vaughn has now put up a four-win improvement from his first-year performance of 24-30 in 2018.
  • Freshman Josh Maguire has reached base in eight consecutive games. He was on base twice today.
  • The Terps got back over .500 for the first time since May 1.
  • Maryland has swept the last home series of the year the last two seasons. The Terps swept Rutgers to end its home campaign in 2018.
  • Today marked the final game of the season at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium, and a big thanks goes out to the people that make home games possible including facilities coordinator Andrea Calles, marketing assistant Jake Longenecker, public address announcer Matt Noble, ticketing assistant Mary Yost, head equipment manager Ron Ohringer and sports administrator Josh Kaplan. Big shout out as well to PJ Ellis and his grounds staff along with the multitude of concession workers, Terp Hosts and various student assistants that staff baseball games. Couldn't do it without any of them.
  • Speaking of not doing anything without them, Maryland's parents held a postgame tailgate outside the stadium. Can't have a good team without good parents.
  • "Plank", the piece of wood with a smiley face on it, is 3-0.
