Terps Drop to 1-1 at Big Ten Tournament

OMAHA, Neb. – The sixth-seeded Maryland baseball team fell to seventh-seeded Ohio State, 3-2, in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament at TD Ameritrade Park.

The Terps will now play second-seeded Michigan in a losers bracket elimination game later on Friday afternoon.

What to Know

  • The Terps and Buckeyes played a two hour and 53 minute game… that happened in a span of 15 hours. The two teams played the first seven and a half innings on Thursday night before coming back to complete the game on Friday morning.
  • Right-hander Trevor LaBonte was solid in the biggest start of his career, tossing six and a third while giving up just two hits, two runs (one earned) with three strikeouts. Ohio State got on the board with a Brady Cherry RBI single in the first before taking advantage of a Taylor Wright error to score a second in the third.
  • In the third, Maxwell Costes' second homer of the tournament, a two-run shot off Griffan Smith, tied the game at 2-2. Costes has six home runs in his last 11 games.
  • LaBonte used double plays to work through the fifth and sixth. Right-hander Mark DiLuia got the final two outs of the seventh, but allowed a run in the eighth that gave Ohio State the lead.
  • Senior Taylor Wright led off the eighth with a hit. Costes then reached second on a potential double play ball that was thrown away at first, with Wright put out at second. At that point, the game was halted due to dangerous weather.
  • The game was picked back up at 11 a.m. Friday morning with Ben Irvine running for Costes at second. Michael Pineiro and Justin Vought struck out to end the frame.
  • After lefty Andrew Vail worked a clean to half of the ninth, Maguire walked to begin the Terrapin ninth. Chris Alleyne then bunted over Maguire to bring up Benjamin Cowles, who struck out. Senior AJ Lee then flied out to center to end the game.

Other Stuff

  • As of publication, the Terps have hit the only three home runs at the Big Ten Tournament. Costes has two and Justin Vought has one.
  • Maryland has given up just two earned runs in 18 innings at the Big Ten Tournament.
  • Freshman Josh Maguire has reached base in 10 consecutive games after a double and a walk against the Buckeyes.
