COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Maryland women's soccer team will play its first Big Ten road game of the season this Saturday, September 28 when the Terps face Rutgers in Piscataway, N.J. The game is Maryland's lone single-match week of the season, facing a Scarlet Knights team ranked 20th in the USILA Coaches Poll. This is Maryland's first matchup with a ranked team this season.
The match will be streamed on BTN Plus. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 pm on Saturday night.
Flippens Fantstic in Debut
- Senior Jlon Flippens has made an immediate impact in the three games she's played this season, notching a team-best four assists.
- Flippens' four assists the most in a single season by a Terp since she posted four in 2016 as a freshman. One more assist would give her the most by a Terp in a single season since Shannon Collins tallied six in 2014.
- In her season debut against Princeton (9/15), she tallied two assists to help Maryland clinch a 3-0 shutout.
- She followed it up with two more assists on both of Maryland's goals in a 2-0 shutout of Minnesota on Sept. 22.
- The Philadelphia, Pa. native appeared in just two games before missing the rest of 2018 season with an injury, and sat out the first seven games of this season while continuing to work her way back.
• Junior center back Malikae Dayes was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week in an announcement made by the conference offices on Sept. 17
• Dayes is the first Terrapin to garner B1G Defensive Player of the Week honors in school history. She played all 200 minutes for the Terps last week, helping the Terps to a 1-1 tie with Temple and a 3-0 victory over Princeton.
• The Brampton, Ontario native played a lead role in the defensive unit that allowed just one goal and five shots on target in 200 minutes, including shutout over a Princeton team that was receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Top-25.
• This is the first career conference weekly award selection for Dayes, and the second of the season for the Terrapins after Erin Seppi garnered Goalkeeper of the Week honors last Tuesday.
Leone Wins 300th as Terps Top Princeton
• Maryland head coach Ray Leone won hiss 300th career game as a collegiate women's soccer head coach in emphatic fashion on September 15, as Maryland dispatched Princeton 3-0 at Ludwig Field.
• Leone became just the 27th active Division I women's soccer coach to reach the milestone, and only the second active coach in the Big Ten to reach 300 victories.
Leone Coaching Honors
- Has won six conference titles and two conference Coach of the Year awards in his career.
- Led three different schools to the NCAA Tournament (Arizona State, Clemson, Harvard).
- Won the NAIA National Championship at Berry College in his second year.
- Has had 23 winning seasons over his coaching career.
- Ranks in the top-30 among active Division I head coaches in career wins.
- Was a part of starting three college women's soccer programs as an assistant at Clemson and as the first head coach of Berry College and Creighton.
Poarch, Wynn Garner WPSL Honors
• Redshirt sophomore Alyssa Poarch and freshman Keyera Wynn were both named the Offensive Players of the Year in their respective Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) Divisions on August 23.
• Poarch had a standout summer in the WPSL, leading the league in points (37) on 16 goals and five assists for the Coastal Atlantic FC (CAFC) Ospreys to earn OPOY honors in the Mid-Atlantic Colonial division.
• Wynn was named the OPOY in the Carolinas Conference Northern Division, scoring three goals for North Carolina Fusion U-23 this summer.
Terps Sign Team Impact Teammate Mikayla Hirsch
The Maryland women's soccer program officially welcomed nine-year-old Team IMPACT teammate Mikayla Hirsch to the program on August 11 in a signing ceremony held in Heritage Hall of the XFINITY Center.
• Mikayla and the Terrapins were brought together by Boston-headquartered national nonprofit Team IMPACT, whose mission is to improve the quality of life for children facing serious and chronic illnesses through the power of team. Mikayla was diagnosed in 2014 with Crohn's Disease.
• Through Team IMPACT's program at the University of Maryland, Mikayla is now an official member of the Women's Soccer Team. As a team member, she will attend Terps practices, games, team dinners, events, and more.
• Mikayla's Maryland connection is a deep-rooted one, as both of her parents Leah and Keith are graduates of the university. The family currently resides in Alexandria, Va.
