IOWA CITY, Iowa – No. 17 Maryland battled at Iowa Thursday night, but scoring woes caught up with the Terrapins, who fell 66-61 in the final minutes.
Kaila Charles led the Terrapins (11-4, 2-2 B1G) with 23 points and a career-high 18 rebounds with five steals. Shakira Austin added 11 points with 13 boards and Blair Watson nabbed a career-high nine steals.
"I thought Iowa was sensational tonight," head coach
Brenda Frese said. "I thought they punched first. I thought they competed for 40 minutes. I thought for us, for some positives. I thought our defense kept us in the game when we had a tough shooting night. I don't think I've ever seen a stat of 59 boards, 38 offensive, and the 12 steals we had in the second half. We're still continuing to grow with this team. Being led by our seniors and Kaila and still blending the youthfulness of this team. We're still trying to take those steps and get better every day. This season, with the Big Ten, being the No. 2 RPI conference out there, you're going to be battle-tested every night and that's a positive thing for us."
The Hawkeyes (12-3, 3-1) came out hot, shooting 78 percent from the floor (7-for-9) in the first quarter and making their first six threes. The Terrapins turned up the defensive pressure, holding Iowa without a field goal for the final 6:00 of the second quarter. But the Terps scored just six points in the stretch themselves and trailed 39-30 at halftime.
Coming out of the break, Maryland went on a 12-2 run to take the lead off a layup by Charles with 6:03 left in third quarter. The teams traded buckets and Iowa led 49-47 at the end of the third.Â
Iowa's Makenzie Meyer hit a three with 8:44 to play to put the Hawkeyes up five at 52-47. The Terrapins battled and tied it with 5:44 to go and again with 3:29 to play, both times off layups by Stephanie Jones.Â
Alex Sevillian made a three-pointer with 3:13 left to give Iowa the lead for good.
Kathleen Doyle led Iowa with 21 points, Meyer had 20 and Sevillian finished with 15.
Maryland outrebounded Iowa, 59 to 35 and the Terps grabbed 38 offensive rebounds. As a team, the Terrapins grabbed 18 steals.
Next, Maryland will play at No. 24 Michigan (11-4, 2-2) Sunday at noon. The Terps-Wolverines game will be televised on ESPN2.
