COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- With the 2020 season less than two weeks away, the Maryland women's lacrosse team has selected seniors
Lizzie Colson,
Meghan Doherty,
Brindi Griffin and junior
Grace Griffin as its 2020 captains, head coach
Cathy Reese announced Tuesday.
"Lizzie, Meg, Brindi and Grace are all incredible teammates, hardworkers and even better people who will be outstanding leaders for us in 2020," said Reese. "They have all been an integral part of our success over the last few seasons while being great examples for their teammates. We're very confident they'll be ready to lead the Terps both on and off the field this season."
Colson, a two-time IWLCA All-American, will miss the 2020 season due to an ACL injury sustained last summer while training for Team USA and redshirt to come back in 2021. A Third Team All-American, All-Big Ten, All-NCAA & Big Ten Tournament selection from a year ago, Colson led Maryland with 45 groundballs and stood second with 25 caused turnovers and 127 draw controls, the sixth most ever in a single season by a Maryland player in 2019. Although she won't be on the field, Colson will be a valuable off-the-field leader for the Terps in 2020.
Doherty will lead the Maryland defense in 2020 after totaling 31 groundballs and 18 caused turnovers in 2019. Starting in all 65 games she's appeared in her Maryland career, Doherty has accumulated 64 groundballs and 45 caused turnovers in her career. Doherty came through, drawing a crucial charge with two minutes left that sealed the Terps 2019 National Championship.
Brindi Griffin had an incredible end of the season in 2019, being named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team after scoring nine goals in the Final Four as part of 44 goal, 24 assist season. The leader on Maryland's 2020 attack, Griffin has recorded 82 goals, 51 assists, 133 points and 48 groundballs in her first three years as a Terp. Griffin has stood top-two in on the Maryland team in assists in each of the last two seasons.
Grace Griffin, the 2018 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, has been a force on the offensive and defensive end over her two years as a Terp, tallying 75 goals, 19 assists, 57 groundballs and 27 caused turnovers. Like Brindi, Griffin also finished 2019 incredibly strong, posting seven goals in last year's final four to help lead Maryland to the national championship.
Colson, Doherty, Griffin and Griffin will all be first year captains for the Terps as Maryland graduated its three 2019 captains:
Julia Braig,
Jen Giles and
Megan Taylor.
The Terps will open the 2020 season at George Mason on Saturday, Feb. 8.
