#14 Maryland to Host Towson in Home Opener

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's basketball team (2-1) will host Towson (2-0) Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Terps' home opener at the XFINITY Center. The Terps-Tigers game will be televised on the Big Ten Network. Fans can click here for their channel number. Fans can also watch on the Fox Sports app or FoxSports.com using their cable login information.
 
The season will begin with no fans in attendance at XFINITY Center out of an abundance of caution for the health and safety of our student-athletes and fans. Maryland athletics is hopeful that some fans will be welcomed to XFINITY Center as the season progresses and health conditions permit. 
 

2020-21 STORYLINES

Who's who
  • The Terrapins went 2-1 at the #BeachBubble tournament in Estero, Fla. over the weekend. They ended the tournament with a dominant 115-96 win over No. 14/14 Arkansas Sunday. Katie Benzan led the Terps with 28 points and was named Tournament MVP. Chloe Bibby added 23 points and 12 boards and Diamond Miller picked up her first career double-double with 19 points and 10 boards.
  • Angel Reese was named Co-Big Ten Freshman of the Week Monday after averaging 17.0 points and 8.7 boards in her first three collegiate games. Benzan was named to the Big Ten Player of the Week Honor Roll after she put up 19.0 points and shot 50 percent (13-for-26) from outside the arc.

50 seasons of excellence
  • The University of Maryland women's basketball program will celebrate its 50th varsity season in 2020-21, and will honor the program's rich tradition and history throughout the year. Maryland played its first full varsity season in 1971-72, under the leadership of pioneer Dottie McKnight. During its storied history, the program has won 1,031 games, amassed 43 winning seasons, won 22 conference championships, made 37 postseason appearances and captured the 2006 National Championship

  • Head coach Brenda Frese is entering her 19th season in College Park. She's led the Terrapins to a record of  488-128 (.792), 12 conference titles, 15 NCAA Tournament appearances in 17 postseasons, three Final Fours, six Elite Eights, six Sweet Sixteens and the 2006 NCAA Championship.

  • Maryland is one of the most consistent winning programs in the country. The Terrapins have been ranked in 194 straight Associated Press polls, dating back to the preseason poll of the 2010-11 season. That mark is behind just Baylor (319 weeks) and Connecticut (509 weeks).

  • Thursday's matchup is the 22nd all-time between Maryland and Towson. The Terps are 16-5 all-time vs. the Tigers and 4-0 at the XFINITY Center. They've won the last six straight and 14 of the last 15.
  • Towson head coach Diane Richardson was an assistant at Maryland for the 2007-08 season. Towson assistant Zach Kancher was on Brenda Frese's staff from 2011-14.
