Maryland Falls to James Madison, 4-2

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Maryland baseball team fell to James Madison, 4-2, on Wednesday night at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. Randy Bednar went 2-for-4 with a double to extend his hitting streak to seven, but he was the only Terp in the lineup to record more than one hit on the evening.

What to Know
  • Maxwell Costes recorded a hit and a run scored to extend his on-base streak to 15. The sophomore has reached base successfully in 21 consecutive games dating back to 2019.
  • Chris Alleyne and Troy Schreffler Jr. were the only other Terps to record hits.
  • Zach Thompson got the start, his third of the season. The redshirt junior tossed four innings and allowed four runs on four hits.
  • Thompson allowed all four runs in the second inning, but bounced back and tossed scoreless third and fourth innings.
  • Maryland's bullpen was particularly impressive, combining for five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. Connor Staine tossed 1 2/3 innings, Sam Bello recorded a single out, Elliot Zoellner threw two innings, and Mark DiLuia pitched the final frame.
  • All of Maryland's scoring came in the first inning. Costes' single brought home Bednar, then a bases-loaded HBP drawn by Benjamin Cowles scored Costes.
  • All of James Madison's scoring came in the second inning. Thompson allowed a two-run homer and a solo homer before another run came home on a wild pitch.
  • The Terps had several opportunities with the tying or go-ahead run on base, but were unable to plate any additional runs.
  • Maryland's arms limited JMU to just six hits on the night, and no JMU batter recorded multiple hits.
  • James Madison reliever Grayson Jones earned the win, tossing three innings of relief.
