COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Junior Logan Wisnauskas and senior Jared Bernhardt combined for nine goals, as fourth-ranked Maryland held off a late charge from Albany to secure a 14-13 victory Saturday afternoon.
Wisnausks (5 G, 3 A) tied his career-high with eight points, while freshman Daniel Maltz tallied his second career hat trick to help pace the Maryland offense. Freshman goalie Logan McNaney made 11 saves to clinch his second-straight career victory in the cage after making his first collegiate start last week.
Junior faceoff specialist Justin Shockey turned in another career day at the x, winning a career-best 23 faceoffs (76.6%) clip to give the hosts an edge on possessions. Â
It was all Terps early at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium, racing out at an 8-2 lead by the 11:41 mark in the second quarter. Bernhardt and Wisnauskas would record three goals each during the stretch before Albany answered back with four straight goals to make it 8-6 with 2:18 to play in the half.
Bernhardt snapped the rally from the Great Danes at the 1:04 mark, as the Terps headed into the locker room up 9-6. Â Â
Maryland stayed in control throughout the third quarter, keeping a three-goal cushion while outscoring Albany 4-2. The Great Danes made their push in the final 15 minutes, pressuring Maryland on the ride and forcing mistakes on the defensive end to score three straight and cut it to 13-11.
Wisnauskas tallied what would be the eventual game-winning goal at the 5:08 mark before Albany answered with a pole goal off the ensuing faceoff from Jake Piseno. Graydon Hogg's fourth goal of the daya few minutes later put the Great Danes within one at 2:18, before Maryland won the ensuing faceoff.
The Terps couldn't convert on their final possession, giving Albany an opportunity to tie the game in the minute remaining. A pass in front of Maryland's crease for a potential tying goal was stifled by the Terrapin defense, as a swarm of Terp defenders forced a turnover to seal the one-goal victory.
Maryland is back in action next Saturday, March 14 at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium to host Virginia in a rematch of last season's NCAA Quarterfinal. Faceoff is slated for 1 pm. Â Â
Notes:
Jared Bernhardt (131) moved into fifth all-time at Maryland on the all-time goals list, passing Connor Kelly (128) today.
With his second goal of the game, Logan Wisnauskas reached 100 career goals as a Terp, becoming just the 16th Maryland player to reach the milestone.
