COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The 12th-ranked Maryland women's basketball team picked up a 93-87 win at No. 23 Michigan State Thursday evening at the Breslin Center. The Terrapins shot 86.8 percent from the free throw line (33-for-38) and made eight of nine free throws down the stretch to win their 21st straight Big Ten game.
The Terrapins (8-1, 4-0 B1G) picked up their seventh straight victory, second straight over a top-25 opponent, and dealt the Spartans (8-1, 3-1) their first loss of the season.
Sophomore Ashley Owusu led the way with 20 points, 10 boards and 6 assists. She went 10-for-12 at the foul line. Senior Chloe Bibby added 20 points and went 9-for-9 at the free throw line.
Senior Katie Benzan scored 19 points, sophomore Diamond Miller scored 14 and redshirt sophomore Mimi Collins added 14.Â

"I just thought this was a great top 25 matchup against a really good team on the road with Michigan State," head coach Brenda Frese said. "I loved how we came out and we were ready to punch first. I thought we had a ton of aggressive energy in the first half. Being the great team that Michigan State is, undefeated to this point, I thought they just came out in the second half and had a ton of energy and played really, really well. They hit a ton of threes – we were struggling between the threes and off the bounce, but I loved that we weathered the storm. Anytime you can go on the road and get a win like this is huge."
Â
The Terrapins opened the game with a 7-3 run sparked by five points from Collins. The lead was cut short with a surge from the Spartans who battled back, forcing six lead changes in the first quarter's duration.
The second quarter picked up around the 7:00 minute mark when Maryland started an 11-0 run holding the Spartans scoreless for four minutes. The Terps scored 13 points off turnovers and went a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line in the second entering halftime with a 48-33 lead.
Â
Michigan State made seven of its first 10 shots to start the third quarter to cut the Terps' lead to seven at 57-50. Maryland rattled off seven unanswered points, five from Diamond Miller, to hold off the Spartans' push.
Â
The Spartans went on a 9-0 run midway through the fourth quarter to cut the Terrapins' lead to two at 83-81 with 1:46 to play.
Â
The Terps responded with an and-1 by Bibby seven seconds later to go up five at 86-81. The Terrapins made eight of nine free throws in the final two minutes.
Â
Maryland owns the series over Michigan State, 14-2, and has won three straight in the series. The Terps have won 21 straight games against their league opponents, dating back to last Jan. 12.
