ANN ARBOR, MI --Â Suffocating defense and strong goaltending from
Noelle Frost led No. 8 Maryland (12-5, 3-4 B1G) past No. 2 Michigan, 2-1, Sunday afternoon in Ann Arbor.
Despite being
outshot 4-1 in the first quarter, Maryland made its lone shot count as
Hope Rose deflected in a shot by
Taylor Mason from the far post in the 11th minute for an early 1-0 lead.
Â
Michigan (13-2, 5-2) would equalize in the 38th minute, with a goal by Sofia Southam, who leads the Big Ten in scoring.
Â
The Terps' leading scorer
Bibi Donraadt answered when she gave the
Terps the lead again just over five minutes later. Graduate student
Julianna Tornetta sent the ball into the circle from the right side and Donraadt got her stick on it to finish it off.
Â
The fourth quarter was a tense affair as Maryland didn't rely just on its defense to close out the game. The offense continued to push forward, looking to add another, but couldn't extend the lead. The
Terps defense remained stellar in the final frame with
Rayne Wright,
Riley Donnelly, Maura
Verleg and Frost not allowing the Wolverines to tie the game.Â

Missy Meharg's Take
"I am just so proud of our defense and
Noelle Frost and the young backfield players and the way that we are playing so resilient, tough defense. You know, defense wins championships. This team, Michigan is a championship-level team. It's really nice for us to look on the stat sheet and not have any penalty corners and to come out on top. Great shot selection, great finishing. Just couldn't be more proud of our team. Â Looking forward to continuing into the last weekend of Big Ten hockey."
