Wilmington, NC- The Maryland women's golf team finished in 17th at the Landfall Tradition Invitational to close out the fall season. Junior
Angela Garvin led the Terrapins, who finished in a five-way tie for 38th (+6) -- 77-73-72).
"Angela stepped up for us in a big way this week. With junior
Maria Vittoria Corbi at homesick, she had one of her most consistent tournaments of the toughest course on our schedule," said head coach
Kelly Hovland. "I am so proud of the growth she showed this week and look forward to her emerging as a leader on this team."
The Collective
"It was not the finish to the fall season we were hoping for, and it's disappointing not to make the final round charge that we needed," said coach Hovland. "We have battled illness on the team the last week, including leaving "MaVi" (
Maria Vittoria Corbi) at home, so we knew it was an uphill battle against a very strong field, and we hung in there through two rounds.Â
The Winds
"The conditions were extremely windy on the first day but not a factor on the final two rounds," said coach Hovland. During the first round, the high winds blew over sophomore Karla Elena Vázquez Setzer's golf back and pushcart into a nearby lake. In the process, she would lose her cell phone and nine-iron but went to birdie the following hole, including three of her last seven holes after the incident. Vázquez Setzer would go on to shoot an even-par 72 that round. "I am really proud of how Karla represented herself and the University of Maryland after experiencing her bag being blown into a nearby lake during the first round," said coach Hovland. "She was composed, respectful to the rules officials, and resilient for the last seven holes of her round. She played the rest of the tournament without her nine-iron but never used it as an excuse." Vázquez Setzer would finish the tournament in a three-way tie for 43rd (+7) -- (72-74-77).

Looking Forward
"We need a great offseason to prepare us for the spring season," said Hovland. " There is a lot to be excited about with this young team, but we have to do the work this winter to develop some consistency, so when we put ourselves in position, we can take advantage of the opportunity."
