Hope Rose Scores OT Winner as #8 Maryland Beats #12 Virginia, 2-1

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA –  A late goal in regulation from senior Kyler Greenwalt and an overtime game-winner from freshman Hope Rose lifted No. 8 Maryland (8-4, 1-3) to a win over their old ACC foe No. 12 Virginia, 2-1, Thursday afternoon at Virginia's Turf Field.

The two teams battled to a scoreless affair throughout the first 54 minutes with Terps goalie Noelle Frost finishing the game with six saves. Rose led Maryland's attack with five shots on goal with Riley Donnelly notching two and Emma DeBerdine and Greenwalt both chipping in one apiece.

A late penalty corner taken by the Cavaliers (7-4, 2-1) was redirected behind Frost, with Maryland needing a goal in the last five minutes of play. That equalizer would come just over a minute later off a penalty corner for Maryland as Greenwalt fired a turnaround shot past the Virginia goalie, knotting the game at one.

After over nine minutes of 7-vs-7 overtime, Rose finally broke through and scored the winner with 31 seconds left in the first overtime period. Brooke DeBerdine sent the ball into the circle, then Bibi Donraadt helped corral the pass and tipped it to Rose for the score.

Missy Meharg's Take
"When we run at top speed with the ball and off the ball, we are so dangerous. When we did that, starting in the third quarter, we dominated. Same thing with Iowa. These are great lessons. We're going to be vigilant about that. It's awfully exciting. Virginia is a great team and to find our way - yes, tie it, yes, go to overtime and win it - is a great testament to the personality of this team."

Rivalry Rekindled
  • Maryland is now 43-22-2 all-time vs. Virginia.
  • The last three matchups have gone to overtime or a shootout, with Maryland taking two of the three.

Closing In On 600
