Terps Head to Bahamas for Baha Mar Hoops Championship

COLLEGE PARK, MD - The Maryland men's basketball team is set to face Richmond in the first round of the Baha Mar Hoops Bahamas Championship Thursday in Nassau. This is the program's first trip to the Bahamas in its 103-year history.

Louisville and Mississippi State will meet on the other side of the bracket. Thursday's game will be broadcast on the Maryland Sports Radio Network and CBS Sports Network. 
 

RICHMOND STORYLINES

HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT TROPHIES
  • Maryland has a long history of success in preseason tournaments, collecting 32 championships and a 121-52 (.699) overall record.
  • The Terrapins have participated in six tournaments since 2013-14, posting a 13-1 record and capturing five titles during that span. Maryland most recently won the Orlando Invitational in 2019-20.

BIAS IS IN THE BUILDING
  • Maryland men's basketball is celebrating the induction of the late Len Bias to the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame this Sunday, Nov. 21, in Kansas City.
  • He is just the fourth Terrapin to be represented in the hall, joining Tom McMillen and head coaches Lefty Driesell and Gary Williams.
  • Maryland will celebrate Bias at its first home game following the ceremony on Dec. 1 against Virginia Tech, when it will give out replica Bias jerseys to the first 4,000 students in attendance.

RUSSELL REPORT
  • Graduate guard Fatts Russell is among the active career leaders in a number of categories. He currently ranks 10th in steals (216), 28th in points (1,658) and t-34th in assists (428).
  • Russell left Rhode Island as the program's all-time leader in steals.

STEVE BLAKE MAKES THE MARYLAND HOF
  • Maryland is also celebrating legendary 2002 National Champion point guard Steve Blake, who is being inducted into the Maryland Athletics Hall of Fame Friday night on campus.
  • Blake is the only four-time All-ACC selection in program history and remains the school's leader in career assists (972), single-season assists (286) and career starts (136).

THE BOYS BOUNCE BACK
  • The Terrapins bounced back from their first loss of the season with a 69-67 defeat of Hofstra Friday.
  • Senior Eric Ayala led the way with 14 points, but his biggest play was a block on Hofstra's game-winning 3-point bid in the waning seconds with the score tied 67-67.
  • The block resulted in a foul that sent Ian Martinez to the free throw line, where he proceeded to knock down both free throws for the win.

SERIES HISTORY
  • Maryland is 26-15 all-time against Richmond in a series that dates back to the inaugural meeting in 1924. The Terrapins have had the better of the Spiders as of late, having won nine consecutive games dating back to 1971.
  • The most recent meeting on Nov. 25, 2016 was an overtime thriller, as Melo Trimble scored 31 points and Kevin Huerter added 12 and 10 to defeat the Spiders, 88-82, at Barclays Center.
