UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Jared Bernhardt (3G, 4A) tallied seven points and eclipsed 200 points for his career as Maryland (2-0) used a steady attack and stifling defense to take down Penn State (0-2) 13-7 Friday night.
Logan Wisnauskas (3G, 2A) and Daniel Maltz (4G, 1A) also finished with hat tricks, while Maryland used constant defensive pressure and a relentless ride to cause 14 turnovers.
Bernhardt became just the sixth player in program history to hit the 200-point mark at Maryland, joining Matt Rambo (257), Bob Boneillo (231), Joe Walters (227), Ray Altman (214) and Frank Urso (208) on the all-time list. Â
After the Terps jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first quarter, Penn State answered with a three-goal run to take a 4-3 lead by the 11:07 mark in the second quarter.
UMD would tally the final two goals in the half, as Bernhardt and Fairman both scored to give Maryland a 5-4 edge at the break.
The second half was all Terps, as Maryland outscored the hosts 8-3 on back-to-back four-goal quarters.
The opening half was plagued by errant play from both teams, as Maryland accounted for nine of the first half's 20 turnovers. The Terps were able to clamp down a bit in the second half, only surrendering six while Penn State finished with 23 for the game. Â
Maryland will return to action next Saturday, March 6 when the Terps host Johns Hopkins at Maryland Stadium. Faceoff is slated for 1 p.m.
