View From The Box
- In a game befitting of the occasion, the Terps and Scarlet Knights played a high energy, emotional contest that saw two tremendous goals in regulation and an exciting PK shootout to end it.
- The Terrapins owned the first part of the first half, dominating possession and the chances. Rutgers withstood the pressure and the half was mostly even post the 25th minute mark. Maryland held a 5-2 advantage in shots heading into the interval.
- The home side once again ratcheted up the pressure coming out of the locker room. Eric Matzelevich had the best chance in the 52nd minute, forcing a good save from Oren Asher in the Rutgers goal.
- The Scarlet Knights took the lead in the 75th minute on a fantastic scissor kick volley goal from Ola Maeland.
- Junior Justin Gielen came up with some brilliance of his home to even the match. The Edgewater, Md., native let fly from 30 yards out and curled it into the side netting.
- Gielen put in a tremendous shift up top, as did Eric Matzelevich who made his return from injury.
- Maryland was the better of the two sides after the goal, which continued into both overtime periods. Brayan Padilla had had the best chance of the extra session, getting on the end of a cross from close range. Asher made an incredible reaction save to keep the match going. Lowell then made a one-on-one save minutes later to extend the match.
- The penalty shootout came down to the sixth round. Lowell made a great save to deny Anthony O'Donnell which set up the moment for Heitzmann. The redshirt senior buried his spot kick to send the Terps into the Big Ten Semifinals.
- Lowell made four saves and put together his best performance in a Maryland shirt.
