#12 Maryland Surges Past #6 Rutgers, 4-2

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – No. 12 Maryland scored three goals off penalty corners to beat No. 6 Rutgers, 4-2, Thursday evening at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
 
Both teams took nine penalty corners in the match, with the Terrapins (7-6, 5-3 B1G) scoring on three of theirs and earning a penalty stroke on another.
 
"I couldn't be more proud of the women," head coach Missy Meharg said. "They followed the game plan. The way we started with such dominance and letting the ball do the work. Rutgers is an awesome team. Just so proud of the women for playing so strong and so connected."
 
Maryland came out of the gate firing as Kyler Greenwalt and Nathalie Fiechter both got shots off in the opening minute. Both were stopped.
 
Rutgers opened the scoring when it finished off a rebounded shot on a penalty corner. Liz Romano sent in the first goal 3:57 into the match. Rutgers led 1-0 at the end of the first quarter.
 
Maryland scored twice in the final five minutes of the second quarter to take the lead going into halftime. Sophomore Emma DeBerdine buried a loose ball off a penalty corner. Sophomore Maura Verleg took the initial shot and DeBerdine finished it off.
 
The Terrapins earned a penalty corner at the end of regulation, then they were awarded a penalty stroke on the corner. Junior Riley Donnelly slipped in the penalty shot for the go-ahead goal at halftime, 2-1.
 
With 8:04 left in the third quarter, Maryland extended its lead to 3-1 when Verleg buried a shot off another penalty corner, this time set up by Fiechter and Bibi Donraadt.
 
With 37 seconds left in the third quarter, DeBerdine tipped in another loose ball off a penalty corner to make it a 4-1 lead for Maryland.
 
Rutgers got one goal back in the fourth quarter when Milena Redlingshoefer scored off another penalty corner. The Scarlet Knights took seven shots in the fourth quarter with senior goalkeeper Noelle Frost making three saves to preserve the lead.
 
Maryland had 12 shots to Rutgers' 15. Frost finished with seven saves.
 
The Terrapins will close the regular season Saturday with a noon matchup vs. Rutgers at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Saturday's matchup will be streamed on BTN Plus.
