COLLEGE PARK, MD -
Bibi Donraadt scored the game-winning goal 51 seconds into the second overtime to lift #9 Maryland to a 4-3 victory over #20 Saint Joseph's on Sunday afternoon. The Terps have now won 25 consecutive season openers. The Terps took a one-goal lead in each of the first three quarters, only to be equaled by the pesky Hawks each time.
Donraadt was the hero of the game on both ends of the field in the extra sessions. With under two minutes left in the first overtime, she made a game-saving play as she came in behind goalie
Noelle Frost to make a clutch defensive save on a shot by Anna Miller with a minute left in first period of the extra session.
Back-And-Forth-Affair
• The teams traded single goals in the first, second and third quarters to stand deadlocked 3-3 after 45 minutes.
•
Emma DeBerdine opened the scoring for the Terps off a feed from
Kyler Greenwalt to put the Terps up with 10:22 elapsed. The Hawks tied the game two minutes later on a tally by Manu Ghigliotti.
• In the second quarter,
Taylor Mason put the Terps back in front 2-1 off a pass from
Nathalie Fiechter only to be answered by Cassidy Atchison for a 2-2 tie at halftime.
• The third quarter saw the same pattern as
Margot Lawn put Maryland up 3-2 just 3:41 into the second half. But Saint Joseph's tied the game again as Celeste Smits scored 11 minutes later.
Missy Meharg's Thoughts
"Winning a double overtime situation, it propels your season. It lets you know, you're not going to play for a national championship if you're not doing this at least 4-6 times. And you know you're going to do it in the finals of the Big Ten and the semifinals and finals of the NCAA. We just practice it all. We're so fortunate with our schedule. I was super excited with how we came out. We went ahead three times and the resilience to stay strong.
Bibi Donraadt was offensively, defensively just had a great day. And the girls coming back from Chile [
Riley Donnelly,
Emma DeBerdine,
Hope Rose], I mean God bless them. They're resilient, they're athletes."
