Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 13 Terps Win Seventh In Row, 81-69, At No. 22 Iowa

IOWA CITY, IA – The No. 13 Maryland women's basketball team won its seventh game in a row beating the No. 22 Iowa Hawkeyes 81-69 inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Monday night. The Terps (19-6, 11-3 Big Ten) led by as many as 20 points in the second half and withstood a rally by the Hawkeyes to secure a win for head coach Brenda Frese in a return to her home state. With many friends and family in the arena, Frese was coaching at Iowa for the first time since the passing of her father Bill Frese in mid-January.

With the win, Maryland moved into a tie for second in the Big Ten with Michigan and Ohio State, all 11-3 (.786 win percentage). Indiana leads the conference at 10-2 (.833).

Angel Reese led the Terps with a game-high 25 points to go along with 13 rebounds – her 14th double-double this season. Diamond Miller (20 points) and Chloe Bibby (16 points) also finished in double-figures for Maryland.

The Hawkeyes cut the lead to as little as five (66-61) with just under seven minutes left in the game, but a 10-2 run by the Terps, highlighted by threes from Bibby and Katie Benzan, ballooned the lead back up to 13 with just over three minutes left.

Maryland's defense was suffocating in the first half as it held the Hawkeyes to 34% shooting and 1-of-8 from three-point range. The Terps held a massive advantage on the boards, outrebounding Iowa 44-31, led by Reese. Shyanne Sellers grabbed eight boards and Bibby corralled eight also.

The Terps also limited Caitlin Clark, the nation's leading scorer at 27.2 PPG, holding her to 19 points (her second-lowest total of the season), including just eight points in the first half on 3-of-13 shooting. Clark didn't make a field goal for the first 14:38 fo the game. She finished 7-of-25 overall and 3-of-13 from three. Maryland's defense also forced Clark also into 10 turnovers, her second-most this season (11). Iowa is now 16-7 overall and 10-4 in the Big Ten.

Breaking Down The Action
  • The first quarter was a high-scoring back and forth affair that saw the Terps hit 10 shots on 48% shooting, including two three-pointers. Six different Terps hit a shot in the opening frame, with Reese leading the way with eight points.
  • Maryland built a lead as large as 17 in the first half after a three-pointer by Miller with 46 seconds left in the second quarter. Reese would account for a game-high 18 points in the first 20 minutes of play, while the defense held Iowa to just 13% shooting from three in the first half.
  • Bibby's third three of the game extended the Maryland lead to 20 (57-37) with just under seven minutes left in the third quarter. Iowa managed to cut into the Terps lead, making it a 66-55 game after Clark scored nine in the quarter.
  • The aforementioned Hawkeye run was answered by the Terps' potent offense, thanks to the interior presence of Reese, along with the hot-shooting of Bibby and Benzan. Two late steals by Sellers sealed the game for the Terps, keeping the lead at double-digits.
