No. 13 Terps Drop Big Ten Battle At No. 9 Michigan, 71-59

ANN ARBOR, MI – In a game that was tight throughout, No. 13 Maryland saw its eight-game winning streak come to an end as No. 9 Michigan stayed perfect at home, winning 71-59, at the Crisler Center on Sunday afternoon.

Michigan's (21-4 overall, 12-3 Big Ten) win vaulted the Wolverines into first place in the Big Ten ahead of the Terps (20-7, 12-4). Maryland is tied with Ohio State (12-4, .750 win percentage) in third place while second-place Indiana is 11-3 (.786 win percentage) in conference play. The Terps will take on the Hoosiers on Friday when Indiana comes to College Park. Michigan plays Michigan State (8-6) and Iowa (11-4, .733 win percentage) to close its regular-season season.

Chloe Bibby led the Terps with 15 points and three rebounds. Shyanne Sellers scored 11 points, had four rebounds, three steals and two assists. Diamond Miller added 10 points for the Terps

Michigan's 10-0 run early in the fourth quarter provided separation for the Wolverines as they took the first double-figure lead of the game with just seven minutes left in regulation at 53-43. Maryland cut its deficit to five points on a Bibby three-pointer with 51.8 second left, 64-59. Michigan hit nine free throws in the final 50 seconds to secure the season sweep of the Terps.

Michigan played great defense on the high-scoring Terps, limiting them to 59 points, 21 below their season average of 80.3 per game and 33.3 field goal percentage along with 5-of-21 from three-point range.

Naz Hillmon led Michigan with 29 points and 11 rebounds.

Breaking Down The Action
  • A tightly-contested first quarter saw the Terps take a 13-11 lead after Katie Benzan knocked down a triple and Miller converted a layup to close out the period giving Maryland its first lead of the game.
  • The game stayed within two possessions in the second quarter as the teams stood deadlocked at 24-24 at halftime. Hillmon led all scorers with 14 points. Bibby topped the Terps with eight points.
  • Maryland opened the second half with a pair of three-pointers by Benzan and Sellers to lead 30-24. Michigan scored nine of the game's next 11 points to regain the edge, 33-32 with five minutes left in the quarter. The teams traded leads five times in the quarter with the Wolverines holding a 45-41 edge leading to the fourth quarter.
  • After a Miller layup to open the quarter, bringing the Terps within two points, Michigan reeled off 10 points in a row finished by a Maddie Nolan, giving the Wolverines the largest lead of the day for either team at 55-43 with 6:35 left in the fourth.
Brenda Frese's Take
"A really hard-fought game by both teams. That's a really good Michigan team. I thought it was an extremely physical game by both teams but it was a tough shooting night for us. We had to have our defense. We're disappointed in our rebounding - that was an area that we really wanted to improve on and didn't move the needle in that area. But I love where we're at. You're talking about in late February, playing doubles against all the top teams in the conference that just continue to get you ready and prepared for postseason. So, just continuing to keep scrapping and claw. Ee're a lot better than we were a month ago when we saw them and will be a lot better the next time we see them."

Double-Figure Update
  • Bibby (15 points) hit double-figures for the 18th time this season and 69th time in her career.
  • Sellers (11 points) scored in double-figures for the 11th time this season.
  • Miller (10 points) scored in double-figures for the 13th time this season – seventh in a row – and 53rd time in her career.
Owusu Returns
  • After missing the previous four games, All-American Ashley Owusu returned to action for Maryland.
  • In 20 minutes, she scored two points and had three assists.

Up Next
