Terps Fall 3-0 to No. 21 Wisconsin

Box Score COLLEGE PARK, MD – The Maryland Terrapins (3-9-5, 0-8-1 B1G) lost 3-0 to No. 21 Wisconsin (11-3-3, 6-2-1 B1G) in the team's penultimate match of the season. The Terps saw a couple of key opportunities in the final minutes, but could not find the back of the net.

Maryland held their own in the possession game throughout the contest, maintaining the ball 48% of the time, close to even to the Badgers. Maryland also allowed only five shots on goal in the first half and just three shots in the second.

But the defense struggled to stop a dominant Emma Jaskaniec, who finished the first half with a hat trick. Jaskaniec, a top scorer in the Big Ten, was responsible for all of Wisconsin's goals and made the ultimate difference in this defense-heavy contest.

On the offensive end, Peyton Bernard, Madison Krakower, and Lisa McIntyre all tallied shots for the Terps in this game.

Breaking Down The Action
  • Maryland's McIntyre notched the first shot of the contest, but it flew into the hands of Wisconsin's keeper.
  • The teams traded possession for a while before Liz Beardsley made a diving grab in the 12th minute to save the Badgers' first shot of the match.
  • Wisconsin's Jaskaniec put one through in the 15th minute, giving the Badgers an early 1-0 advantage.
  • The Badgers upped their lead to 2-0 in the 20th minute with another strike by Jaskaniec.
  • Eden White came up big on defense in the 32nd minute, sprinting in time to clear another Wisconsin shot.
  • Kennedy Bell surged up the field on a breakaway in the 39th minute but was cut off by Wisconsin's defense.
  • Jaskaniec earned a hat trick with a breakaway goal in the 42nd minute, upping the score to 3-0 at the half.
  • By the 60th minute, neither team had put up a shot in the second half.
  • Halfway through the second half, Wisconsin launched a handful of shots on target that were either saved by Beardsley or cut off by Maryland's fullbacks.
  • Ava Morales sent a shot just above the crossbar after a set piece in the 82nd minute.
  • McIntyre delivered a hopeful cross-body strike in the 84th minute that rolled outside of the goal.
Coach Nemzer's Take
"We saw Emma Jaskaniec getting the start and we knew that she was going to be a target for them. We spoke before the match about not letting her get free shots. Unfortunately, she had three free looks and she's probably one of the best in the Big Ten. We cleaned some things up at halftime and I thought we had a much better second half as far as competing and putting them under pressure. Also, I'm really proud of a lot of people that stepped up and played minutes that usually don't play minutes. Whether it was the red card from the last game or injuries, people stepped up and competed in the second half, so I'm happy with that piece of it."

Peyton Bernard on How Team Can Improve in Attacking Third
"I think we need to work on switching the point of attack. We talked about it a lot in practice and being strong on the ball. Talked about getting under the ball for first and second movements. So, I think once that starts to click, we're going to be putting more in the back of the net."
