Terps Drop Road Match At No. 1 Nebraska

Box Score LINCOLN, NE — The University of Maryland volleyball team put up a strong fight against No. 1 Nebraska Friday night at the Bob Devaney Sports Center, but fell 3-0 (19-25, 17-25, 8-25) against the top-ranked team in the country.

Despite putting up a strong fight in the opening set, the Terps could not overcome the strong Husker attack. After an early run from Nebraska in the second, Maryland matched its opposition the rest of the way, but could not get over the hump to take the lead. The No. 1 team in the country sealed the contest with an early run in the third set.

Senior libero Lilly Gunter recorded her 1,500th career dig in the third set, becoming the fifth player in Maryland volleyball history to reach that milestone in their collegiate career.

The Terrapins fall to 14-9 with a 4-7 Big Ten record, while the Cornhuskers continue their undefeated campaign with a 20-0 overall standing with an 11-0 conference mark.

How It Happened

Set 1: Nebraska 25 - Maryland 19
  • The Huskers opened the match scoring the first three points.
  • Maryland countered with a 4-0 run to take the lead, utilizing an Eva Rohrbach solo block along with a service ace from Lilly Gunter. 
  • Nebraska countered with a 3-0 run, making use of a pair of Merritt Beason putaways to go up 7-5.
  • A Rohrbach and Sydney Dowler double block leveled the frame at 8-8.
  • With five kills, Nebraska gained separation with a 7-1 run to go up 15-9.
  • Out of the media timeout, Samantha Schnitta notched a kill to end the run.
  • The squads traded the next 12 rallies before Nebraska broke the side out streak with an over pass to put the Huskers up 22-15.
  • Maryland took four of the final seven points in the set, but could not come back
  • Schnitta led the Terps with four kills on a .429 hitting clip in the frame.

Set 2: Nebraska 25 - Maryland 17
  • The Huskers opened the frame on a 6-1 run, leading to a Maryland timeout.
  • Thanks to a kill and block assist from Eva Rohrbach, the Terps took three of the next six points.
  • Nebraska added three points on kills from Andi Jackson and Harper Murray to trigger Maryland's second timeout.
  • Six of the next 10 rallies went in favor of Maryland, with Samantha Schnitta and Anastasia Russ providing kills to pull Maryland's deficit to 16-10.
  • Nebraska got to set point with a 10-4 run.
  • Maryland put together a late 3-0 run at set point, with Jonna Spohn serving up an ace.
  • After the late run, Harper Murray closed out the frame with a kill.

Set 3: Nebraska 25 - Maryland 8
  • The Huskers began the third set on an 8-0 run.
  • A 9-1 run from Nebraska helped the Huskers take control of the set and match. 

Numbers to Know
  • 1,500: Lilly Gunter recorded her 1,500th career dig in the third set. She became the fifth player in Maryland volleyball history to record 1,500 collegiate digs, producing 1,190 at Mississippi State and 310 at Maryland.
