Terps Suffer 1-0 Loss To Rutgers

Box Score COLLEGE PARK, MD -- In a defensive affair, the Terps fought hard all Saturday afternoon at Ludwig Field, but were doomed by a successful Rutgers penalty kick in the 85th minute and ultimately fell 1-0.

Liz Beardsley made four big saves to lead the Terps before a Catherine DeRosa penalty gave the Scarlet Knights the opportunity for a goal.

Maryland's best offensive chance of the night came with just under 20 minutes to play when Hannah Schapiro had an open lane and took a strike that sailed just over the crossbar.

Numbers to Know
  • 50: With four saves tonight, goalkeeper Liz Beardsley now has 50 saves over the season, for an average of 4.17 a game.
Coach Nemzer's Take
"I'm just extremely proud of how much the team fought. I though we made some adjustments in the second half and I thought we were able to put higher pressure on them in the second half. That's the fight that I knew we could have and I'm really proud of how team rallied. I felt they rallied around me a little bit, as well as Kenie [Wright], so I'm really proud of what they did today."

Katie Coyle on Reason for Improved Chemistry
"I think today we really had something to play for. A lot of us have a lot of past history with this Rutgers team and obviously [Coach Nemzer] has a lot of history with them also. In the locker room before we kind of talked about banding together and fighting for her and a greater purpose. I think that really helped us today."

Kennedy Bell on Team's Strong Chance Creation in Match
"I think that is something, along with getting shutouts, that we've been harping on because we know it's something that we can do and it's frustrating it isn't happening. I think overall, that's definitely a step in the right direction."
